1. Read a good translation of Thucydides
And you will not only learn to appreciate ancient history, but realize just how much none of us have learned from it, either :P

Reading him goes well with a good Pinot Noir.

Walter Blanco and Jennifer Tolbert Roberts, translators.

Although most out there are just fine. :-)

41. Thucydides is incredibly dry and windy--watch yourself.
Edited on Sun Apr-15-07 08:49 PM by jpgray
Basically all we know of the Peloponnesian war is based on his writings, though, so if you're interested have a look. A far more readable ancient war history is Caesar's Commentaries on the Gallic Wars. It's more graceful and elegant writing than that of Thucydides.

5. In all seriousness though...
...I find myself less of a people person as I age. I just want to hang out with my homies and just forget about all the stupidness and stupid people.

I don't feel guilty saying I probably dislike 9/10 people.

It really is like that insurance commercial "life comes at you fast."

Edited to say: As a fellow (former) English major, I realize the correct phrasing would be "life comes at you quickly."

My mom used to say that and it drove me crazy.

My mother-in-law also said it, and when my husband was a kid, he thought she was saying "beam" as in "Did you have a beam today, dear?"

16. Some of mine:
1) Dark chocolate (I LOVE milk chocolate, though ... :9 )
2) Black coffee (I LOVE coffee with lots and lots of milk, though ... :9 )
3) Classical music. Yes, I do somewhat appreciate Mozart and Bach, etc. However, I always thought that when I got older, I'd be a "fan." I can never seem to become a fan, however, and continue to listen to pop music most of the time.
4) Adult clothing like heels and fitted, tailored suits. I just like my jeans and flat shoes and pony tails. I still dress like I'm in college even though I'm 41.

19. is 1971 considered ancient history?
Just wondering what the 'yet' stands for.

I have always loved ancient history, so I am not sure how that became an adult thing. I have yet to see or hear any classical opera (or to drink any red wine for that matter)

So I guess I would pick 'work' and 'career'. Also 'automobiles' and life insurance.

31. How do you define "grown up"??
I'm in my late 40's and there is an awful lot of stuff out there that I just never did "grow up" to like.

Artichokes. WTF is the point of an artichoke? Hell of a lot of work to eat the blasted things and very little pay off.

Opera. Musicals of ANY kind in a language I don't speak really put me off. The last thing I'm gonna pay money to hear is someone screeching at me in a language I don't speak.

Consommé. It is broth. Period. It isn't fancy and if I want a cup of broth I'll order it. Consommé is for sick people when they are on a clear liquid diet.

Hot tea. I take my tea with ice in it. Never did get my head around the idea of hot tea. This herbal stuff is really nasty too. "Have a nice cuppa...ANYTHING" is probably not gonna be something I like. Put it over ice and maybe we'll talk about it.

Oatmeal. Yuck. It is sticky and nasty crap that might make me live longer but I'll FEEL like I've lived too long if I have to face that crap every morning.

Cocktail parties. OK, I am there for refreshing beverages, but dammit, I sure don't want to have to talk to some boring socially retarded person in the corner when I'm having them. WHO ever thought cocktail parties were a plan? WHO decided they are so damn important?

Pantyhose and hair removal. I am not gonna go there, but this part of adulthood for women just sucks. Somewhere, someplace, somebody (probably a MAN) decided that a well groomed woman won't have hair on her legs and she'll be wearing ultra sheer expensive socks that have NO durability. Jeesh. I like cotton.

I can go on--but I think I've probably done an adequate job of illustrating my lack of sophistication with this limited offering.

I'll wear the damn things grudgingly when I have to but I'll never like them.

2. "Functions" - you know, the gathering you're required to go to for work or social purposes that consist of hanging around with a bunch of stiff, uncomfortable people wearing stiff, uncomfortable clothes and maybe listening to a boring speaker.

3. Paying bills.

I love history and I am listening to Opera as we speak.

An occasional glass of red wine is a treat.

On the other hand I just do not "get " most sports.

I love artichokes and oatmeal.

*Martinis and cigars. :puke: I can deal with an occasional martini, but cigar smoke makes me wanna gag.

*The phrase "act your age". WTF is that supposed to mean??? :P I'm almost 44, and I know when to be serious (as little as possible) and when I can have fun (which is most of the time). How is a 44-year-old SUPPOSED to act? And is there some law that enforces it????

(2) Applique sweatshirts and "mom jeans."

(3) Golf

(4) Gambling

(5) Knitting

(6) "Lo-fat" anything.

(7) Real estate

(8) "Adult-contemporary" music

(9) Jogging

(10) Monogamy

Ancient history and red wine, though, I've loved both of those since I was a teenager. And I am starting to appreciate opera, especially Wagner. :D
