9. How early are a skunk's musk glands active?
If they're big enough to survive on their own before they're able to spray, then it won't be a problem. Just send 'em back into the wild when they're ready to go. On the other hand, if they'll be kept as pets, then their glands can probably be removed if you can find a vet who knows how. Just don't snip out their glands then stick them back in the woods.

26. Why do you think he kept hitting on that cat?
If he was raised by a cat, it would make sense! :)

They are sweet to look at...
But I once knew a dog who had a close encounter of the odoriferous kind. Man, it was bad!

25. Oh, yes
our dog got sprayed in the mouth. It was horrible; we had the poor guy in the shower for 2 hours spraying out his mouth, trying to stop the pain. At first we thought someone had given him chlorine or something; it took 3 days before it began to smell like normal skunk smell. That stuff is bad in high concentrations.

10. Oh, oh, oh!!!
That is so cool. Skunks are really quite docile and "friendly," i.e. not too bright. I've had many wild skunks come in through my cat door and eat in the kitchen, just a few feet away from me. Some become so accustomed to me that they let me sit beside them while they eat. I'm sure those kits will get along with their foster parents just fine-- in fact, that might be a problem for them later if they become too casual around humans.

33. never....

They nest under my house, and the mama brings her babies out in early summer to play in the back yard. They used to come inside freely every day and became quite accustomed to me. I finally put a stop to it because they made life difficult for my critter sitters when I was out of town-- they ate all the cat food every night. I put the cat door in a window rather than at porch level. Of course, that didn't stop the raccoons....

Oh yeah, they smell like skunks, but I don't mind the "normal" smell at all. The spray is awful. Two young males did get into a tussle in my living room one night which led to some small discharges, but even that was enough to make my eyes water. Oddly, it didn't last very long, only about a week or so. Rural life!

38. I don't really mind the normal smell either...
It reminds me of Mr GoG's coffee.

But your mention of watering eyes and RealisticPhish's dog's painful encounter makes me wonder what's in skunk spray. I thought it was just smelly...never realized it was an irritant.

32. There are skunks around my neighborhood. They are
really beautiful animals. A little one got caught in the window well next door so we put a little ladder for him to climb out which he did. If only they didn't smell.

I was thinking about this the other day...

Once I had kids, I suddenly found myself more protective of other people's kids. Motherhood seems to work that way...
