AAHHHRRGGG!!!! What to do with a Java developer this stupid?!!
I told her if she needed extra functionality not provided by a class in a standard jar we use on a regular basis that should extend the class to provide the additional functionality.

So what does she do?

She takes the source from cvs, deletes the class and recompiles the jar without the class. Then she copies the source of the class to her project and modifies it. :banghead:

If it wasn't so hard to find developers, and our hire process didn't take so damn long, I'd kick her to the curb tonight. x(

1. I feel your pain...
at least you can recover the source from cvs. I'd think about blocking her access to check shit in, it could make a serious mess of your repository if this his how she operates.

3. thankfully the changes were only checked in with her project and not the library that everyone uses
i manage the team but the problem was that there was a guy who was supposed to be in charge of system administration who fancied himself as a software architect and my boss gave him this developer to do a project with. they built this monster app with no documentation that follows none of our standard practices and now as a result can't be properly maintained or modified. Then of course, the jackass quits and I inherit the app and the dingbat developer. :grr:

2. I'm sure I could be up to speed shortly.
It would take a while, but eventually I'd understand what you posted faster than your hiring process would kick in.

7. Kidding. I can barely add numbers in Excel.
I was joking about the fact that although I'm sure what your subordinate did was stupid, I am so clueless with computers and know so much nothing about Java that I'm not even capable of understanding the stupidity involved.

10. well... think of the problem like this
if you wanted a dining room but you had a basic house that had no dining room, would you tear down the house and rebuild the same house with a dining room extension, or would you just add on the dining room?

11. Ah.
Well, that WAS stupid.

I appreciate your taking the time to explain it to someone even more clueless than your subordinate is. In such a situation I'd like to think that with even the most rudimentary understanding of Java I'd have figured out that there was a better way than what I was trying.

5. Well, at lest she can probably spell Java

I guess you'll just have to look at this as an opportunity to educate her about modifying established classes and directing her to some good sources of education on object principles.

Looks like something in her background didn't take or she learned mechanics without theory.

And be more explicit with her as to your intent and expectations for a while until she gets it.

6. yeah... i guess so
but man, how do you even end up with a job writing J2EE apps if you don't understand OO basics? That is the more disturbing part to me than the sloppy source management.

8. Sounds like she went to one of those "vocational colleges" that...
...get advertised on daytime cable TV. You know, the ones that used to be refrigerator maintenance schools until the administration realized that computer training was more lucrative. I've managed a few graduates of such places over the years and it's usually been a very painful experience. Very much mechanics over theory, and for most of them, "OO" is the sound trains make when the engineer pulls the cord.

if you know any decent java developers who want to move to new york let me know... we still have a vacant spot and i could use another person with more than half a brain in their head. on a scale of 1 to 10 out of seven of us on the team i'd rank three as 8 or better t, two as 5s and one as a 2.

12. Are you kidding?
When I get my hands on a decent Java programmer, I immediately get them drunk and then take pictures of them in compromising positions with livestock. It's the only way I can be sure they'll stay 'til the end of a project. Once I get them, I never let them go. ;)
