How could I pay for (potentially) up to $1700 for data recovery,
when I can only afford $600 out of pocket? I do not currently have a credit card. My parents might chip in some, but I don't want to make them drain their finances, as they're already paying for my college. IMO, the money is worth the recovery, since it's essentially the last three months of my entire portfolio that would be lost, otherwise. Any ideas? The company might be open to payment in two portions, but I'd have to talk to them about it again.

Please be kind. I'm kind of on tenterhooks here. I'll check this occasionally for responses.

1. Could you, perhaps, contract out some of your services
Like say, do some animation for someone, get half your fee up front, etc.?

4. It's a slim possibility.
Time is the issue. It's a competitive market, and finding a taker would take some time, and I have to get the hard drive to Drive Savers withing two weeks to qualify for the discount I negotiated (otherwise, it becomes $2700 x()

5. How long does it usually take to get a credit card?
I've got a window of about two weeks before the charge becomes unaffordable.

6. i think it takes about that time. or ask you parents to pay it and pay them back.
you sound responsible. and i bet your parents have credit cards, that you could use, and pay them back w.interest over a few months

8. Yeah, that's what I'm thinking.
I'd be willing to do it. My mom's out of town until this evening, so I have to wait until tomorrow to talk to both of them at once.

3. You might try Fundable.org ... and then advertise the fundable request
in a way that isn't obnoxious. If you do, let me know, and I'll see if I am able to contribute.

7. What exactly happened to your data?
Is this a hard drive that is no longer readable?

11. It's most likely a drive head crash.
I'll need professional data recovery to get anything off of it. My last backup is from January.

13. why so much money?
I only paid about $50 for a CD-rom off my hard-drive. What is a portfolio, and why would it be worth $1700?

I don't think it takes that long to get a credit card, not if you have a pre-approved offer and do it by phone, but $1700 is a big credit limit for a first-time cardholder. Mine usually started at $1000.

14. Professional data recovery's pricey.
They essetially have to disassemble your hard disk in an anti-static, particle-free room wearing what really look like the love children of surgical scrubs and Hazmat suits.

My "portfolio" is all (well, much of) the work I've done with 3D modeling, animation, game engine programming, level design, etc, to show off to potential employers in the computer gaming business. For three months of work in any of those areas, $1700 is far less than even an entry level position would be paid.

15. I thought my people were professionals
At least they have their own store, although they sometimes give me bad advice. Like when I dropped my laptop they told me I needed a new motherboard. I called HP and they told me I just had to reinstall windows which I could do from the hard-drive by booting up in safe mode.

18. Well, from my understanding,
"professional data recovery" people do data recovery and nothing else. The people at the Apple Store are "professionals," but since they don't have the equipment to do the whole shabang, they aren't professional data recoverers.

20. couldn't they get a good portion of it
at a small fraction of the cost? I would not trust a chain store, but this place saved all of my data for less than $100.

22. Thing is, my hard drive won't even power up when connected to an external source.
It's most likely a head crash, which is prety serious mechanical failure.

21. My hard drive won't even power up.
I doubt recovery software would be able to do anything. :(
