This thread is to mercilessly split infinitives.
You must be bold in your infinitive splitting, making a mockery of linguists and the style books they learn rules from, and all who would demand we use only non-split infinitives to properly communicate together with.

1. i dont know what the fuck you are talking about but
Donald Rumsfeld is giving the president his daily briefing. He concludes by saying: "Yesterday, 3 Brazilian soldiers were killed."

"OH NO!" the President exclaims. "That's terrible!"

His staff sits stunned at this display of emotion, nervously watching as the President sits, head in hands.

Finally, the President looks up and asks, "How many is a brazillion?"

is stuck in my clipboard right now!

:D

4. People who continue to incessantly bitch about split infinitives
Edited on Fri Apr-20-07 02:28 PM by ZombieNixon
piss me off. Split infinitives are an ancient English tradition dating back to the time of the Anglo-Saxons, and are only considered inappropriate because some medieval dominus recti decided that Latin was a more "pure language" and modeled all "proper" grammar after it. (HINT: In Latin, it's impossible to actually split infinitives since the infinitive is only one word.) :P

8. "To be" is one word.
It makes no literal sense when split.

13. Only in other languages.
The only reason that silly-ass idea even came about was because the pedagogues trying to create "English grammar" used Latin grammar as tehir guideline. In Latin, of course, it is one word and can't be split, so these constipated prigs figured English should foolow the same rules.

The problem with that idea is that language is not meant to follow rules, the rules are instead supposed to follow the language. People have always split infinitives in English, because it is a natural part of the language. That's not to say there are no rules, but the rules should only prevent ambiguities and miscommunications (double negatives, for instance), not prevent creativity.

10. How can you encourage people to flagrantly split infinitives?
To actually think any good can come out of this is to really live in a dream world.
