GIBSONTON - At 85, Anthony Ciappetta may be limited in his bicycling range. So when he went out for a ride Thursday morning, no one expected he would turn up in New Jersey a day later.
Relatives reported Ciappetta missing Thursday after he failed to return to his home at 11620 E. Bay Road from a bicycle jaunt.
Hillsborough County sheriff's deputies issued the usual alert. They were looking for a guy on a red bicycle with whitewall tires who was wearing a brown sweater, yellow shorts, black shoes and a blue baseball cap.
Just after 8 a.m. Friday, Ciappetta showed up at the Paramus, N.J., police station. He assured officers he had not pedaled that far.
Ciappetta was riding his bicycle along U.S. 301 near his home when he struck up a conversation with Ray Charron, 32, of Riverview. Ciappetta said he wanted to go to his hometown in New York and asked Charron whether he would give him a ride.
Ciappetta said he would pay Charron for the trip, and soon the two were headed north, said Paramus Deputy Police Chief Richard Cary. They spent the next 19 hours on the road.
