Damn. Two of the greatest writers ever, in the space of a few days.

1. Well, fuck
His book "The Fifties" did a great job of deconstructing so many of the myths of what was really a turbulent decade. His service to history will not be forgotten.

:patriot:

2. This just sucks.
He wrote two of my favorite baseball books ever, "Summer of '49" and "October 1964". He is so enjoyable to read. He taught me a lot and I'll miss him.

3. The young man who killed him is a J-school grad. student, too.
I could not imagine how HE is feeling, too.

6. Truly sad news...
I absolutely love his writing. The style, the meter, the delivery of each word and sentence -- it all flowed so naturally as though he were sitting across the room and that he was speaking to you rather than writing.

He will be missed.

12. Fuck this.
Why do we lose great writers like this, and yet we never seem to get rid of any of the bastards the world would truly be better off without?

Am I just being narrow minded about this?
