My new favorite song
Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the exquisite "A Salty Dog" by Procol Harum

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJVITAVsFVI

"How many moons and how many Junes have passed since we made land"....that part is sheer genius.

4. I'm glad I clicked that.
You'd be hard pressed to find anyone that can compose with that sort of baroque beauty nowadays.

7. wonderful, thought it deserved to have the lyrics posted
(brooker / reid)

all hands on deck, weve run afloat! I heard the captain cry
explore the ship, replace the cook: let no one leave alive!
Across the straits, around the horn: how far can sailors fly?
A twisted path, our tortured course, and no one left alive

We sailed for parts unknown to man, where ships come home to die
No lofty peak, nor fortress bold, could match our captains eye
Upon the seventh seasick day we made our port of call
A sand so white, and sea so blue, no mortal place at all

We fired the gun, and burnt the mast, and rowed from ship to shore
The captain cried, we sailors wept: our tears were tears of joy
Now many moons and many junes have passed since we made land
A salty dog, this seamans log: your witness my own hand

8. A really evocative song, especially when you read the lyrics
Now that I'm researching the song, I came across the original album review in Rolling Stone....the reviewer thought Gary Brooker was singing "Now many moons and many Junes have passed since we made love". Which works, I guess, on some level.

9. It's nice to know that some people around here appreciate
some of the old groups. I've posted many an appreciation thread that sank like lead.

If you want to hear a procol harum concert from the early '70's at the legendary fillmore, just go to www.wolfgangsvault.com.

You can catch a lot of other great concerts there, too. I listen to them every day. Honestly, wolfgangs vault is a godsend.

11. Thanks for the link....I'll enjoy it after work
I'll admit I only knew Procol Harum from "A Whiter Shade of Pale" and "Conquistador"....the more clips I see of them, the more I'm impressed at the breadth of their musicianship. What a band.
