Poll question: The Great DU Fries Debate...
Edited on Fri Apr-27-07 09:32 PM by opiate69
You're at your favorite local eatery, and you order a basket of the crisp, golden brown divine goodness we commony call "French Fries". What condiment do you dip them in or smother them with?

And since I've moved out west, all I get are strange stares when I ask for them that way..

I've never gotten a strange look here in Oklahoma, or in Texas, when ordering them like that.

Now I'm hungry for some. :9

42. I have several customers who ask for brown gravy on their fries.
I'd never heard of it before until I opened my restaurant. I get some strange requests sometimes. I think the strangest so far was chciken wings covered with sausage gravy...

It's generally a Canadian thing, but there are versions served south of the border. It really does taste better than it looks, and it's pure heaven at about 3:00 am after enjoying a few frosty beverages. :9

44. Can you please not lump "catsup" in with that ambrosia known as ketchup?
yuck! Heinz is the only brand loyalty I really have. My wife makes fun of me for it, but I can tell instantly if someone is trying to foist some inferior catsup in an unmarked bottle upon us. And I've had this love since way before I knew who John Kerry was. Mmm... ketchup. When we get to the last half of the bottle, we're almost out.

O Ketchup! Eternal sauce of the glorious tomato! Neither sweet nor sour nor salty, but some mystical combination of all of the above! You are the great equalizer, and can make a barely edible food-stuff into food for the gods, or at least more edible. Tang, thy name be ketchup.

Ok, I'm done.

Malt vinegar, BBQ sauce, honey, and some mustards are good on fries too.

ps - Hello, Hunt's? "Catup" is not even in the spell check. Take that.

I've tried it in the US and it's not the same. The mayo they have there is so much richer. There's so much more flavor to it, that US mayo can't really compare IMO.

64. I like an assortment of condiments
My favorite fry experiences have been at Mondo Fritz on St-Laurent in Montreal. I haven't been there in a while, but the fries were great and you filled little cups with your condiments of choice. Toppings such as spicy curry mayonnaise, garlic-basil-pepper mayonnaise, paprika-harissa mayonnaise, dijonnaise, lemon-pepper mayonnaise, etc.

71. Great joke about ranch dressing:
*DISCLAIMER: I AM a southern woman.

Q: How do you get a southern woman to ....um...perform fellatio?

A. Put ranch on it.

Unfortunately; this is partially true.....

72. If I'm at Granite City Brewery in St. Cloud MN, I use their fabulous fry sauce.
Best fry sauce I've ever tasted.

Otherwise, I'll usually use ketchup, but there are a number of tasty dips, dressings, and sauces that go well with french fries.

84. Garlic!
I LOVE garlic fries, and they sell them at Giants stadium in SF.

I eat them with ketchup, and wash them down with the red wine we smuggle into the stadium! :9

90. The Chip Butty
That's the way to go, imho. Lightly seasoned to taste (I like a little vinegar and salt with some dabs of brown/bbq sauce or ketchup) then made into a sandwich. Ahh, heavenly.

For those not from NJ:

Disco fries are cheese fries with brown gravy.

112. Hold the brown gravy for me but...
keep the cheese. I honestly don't know how many times I've either stumbled into a diner at 3am for cheese fries or stumbled into a diner hungover the next morning for a plate of them. Few things soak up the alcohol better than diner cheese fries.

111. Soy sauce. Trust me on this, it's great!
It makes them taste meaty, and there's obviously no need to salt them. I happened across chips with soy sauce completely by accident -- at the Novia Café in Regina, a diner that also serves Chinese food -- when I mistook the sauce for malt vinegar. This was back in the early '80s, and I've been having them that way ever since.

113. Although I voted for mayo, I have to say that it's all good!!
Potatoes cut up in sticks and fried are good with anything. '

A better question would have been: What do you fry your fries in?

Pork fat?

Duck fat?

Peanut oil?

Beef fat?

I'll vote for duck fat.
