...as a cute way of bringing to mind that literal graphic reference with the heart.

13. Up until about 2-3 years ago, I would have verbalized that as "I Love New York"
Did people always have "heart" in mind or was that a recent development?

15. As I said above, I think it's an attempt to point to that literal graphic...
...so that instead of just saying "I love NY," if one says "I (heart) New York," they're trying to get you to visualize that iconic graphic.

Kinda dumb, but I think that's why.
