Lets talk North American prog rock
Maybe you guys can hip me to more that I'm unaware of. For me, Rundgren's Utopia (vers 1.x) is the shit. Truly proggy stuff fused with his sense of pop melody.

Utopia Theme (epic in 2 parts):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3F90D75Ft7I
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WlGO5pf_IHk&mode=related&search=

Freedom Fighters (more straight up rock):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5wB3qcIEEQ

So clue me in on some more I should check out, either frequently overlooked old stuff on newer work it's easy for an oldster like me to miss. My definition of prog is pretty broad (I like the Dead's proggy aspects, for example), so lem 'em fly.

Thanks in advance,

:hi:

1. Kansas- one of the most underrated progressive rock bands on either side of the Atlantic
Their "hits" didn't do them justice. Here are two of my favorites:

Icarus- Borne on Wings of Steel

Journey from Mariabronn

7. Definitely agree. Their best stuff was never played on radio.
And they put out a lot of great music. (pre Leftoverture)

27. I was gonna mention Spock's Beard. Also IQ
At first I didn't like them, but XM kept playing them and they totally grew on me.

I also like IQ quite a bit. I miss XM mmusiclab, they switchedthat channel to sports so I'm bummed.

OSI, which is an offshoot of Dream Theater also seemed very promising.

6. Definitely check out "It's A Beautiful Day"
Their early stuff was most progressive. After their second album, the lineup and their style both changed dramatically.

It's well worth investigating.

10. I'm not big on prog rock. Closest I get are The Mars Volta and Coheed and Cambria.

15. And second Coheed and Cambria.
I've always viewed C&C as a combination of Rush (for the vocals, obviously), progressive, and power pop.

17. I've heard them and they are a bit heavy for my tastes, BUT
I do like that Maynard dude's other mellower project with more acoustics and atmospheres. A studentburned it for me and it stayed in my car player a good long time last term. I'm spacing on the name. Perfect Circle?

16. And just because they are kick ass groups.
Even though they are from England and Sweden respectively you need to check out Porcupine Tree and Opeth as well. Awesome prog!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgLUaZBuLvI (not a great video but the music is fine)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2G2jlXUkJ84 (Prog Death/Black Metal) Regardless of what you might think of the music I can assure that these guys are very technical musicians.

I must have listened to their last album (Ghost Reveries) about 4 times in a row driving from VA to FL last year.

A song from that album: http://youtube.com/watch?v=AY5LRReFYus

Fantomas w/ Terry Bozzio - Montreaux Jazz Fest 2005

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0q_ot1kwTrs

Mastodon - "Capillarian Crest" (not really a prog band, but the spirit is definitely there in this song)

Dillinger Escape Plan - "Panasonic Youth"

21. Man, this list is now most impressive.
I'm bookmarking it in order to make my through all the links. Thank everyone. I really need some new prog in my life, and if I don't find it here, I don't imagine it's been invented yet.

Rock out in 11/4 or some other whacked out broken meter,
