3. An interesting perspective.

In the Criminal Code of Canada

"cattle" means neat cattle or an animal of the bovine species by whatever technical or familiar name it is known, and includes any horse, mule, ass, pig, sheep or goat;

The cruelty to animals provisions make "killing, wounding, maiming or injuring animals that are cattle" a more serious offence than committing the same offence against other animals. It's reflection of the time when animals were regarded strictly in terms of their real property value.

Theft provisions of the Code include "Theft under $5,000", "Theft over $5,000" and "Theft of Cattle". The highest penalties are for theft of cattle.
