23. Thanks for the hug
Actually that's the short list.

You could add -

My mother's death when I was 14

The subsequent desertion of my father

Motherhood at 19

The death of at least 20 friends before I was 25

Poverty

Hitchhiking across the country twice - and alone

But really, I tend to look at it all as a learning experience. I'm in a very good place now, my kids are all doing great and grew up amazingly sane and I've had some intersting adventures. What more can a person ask for? :hi:

10. I've been lucky.
I've survived a year of inner-city high-school teaching, the friendliest divorce on the planet, and as of yesterday, my first year of law school.

14. Hmmm
Sexual molestation (by two different individuals, at two different times in my life)

Psychological Misdiagnoses

Sexual assault

Peer rejection (different incidents, different times)

Credit card debt (I'm using it wisely now)

Loneliness

Quackery from a chiropractor that, if unchecked, would have led to paralysis. (And my symptoms were constantly pawned off as being psychiatric... I was told to sue by no less than 14 people, 2 of which had observed my counselor in action. I did not pursue the various misdiagnoses, as issues other than the physical one were afoot. She later resigned, claiming 'family reasons'. For some reason, I doubt that was the truth)

College in a degree I couldn't fully relate to

Brutal supervisor

Myself

Failed relationships that never were from the start...

Employment for an agency that discourages personal growth - aka 'like it or leave' in a time that everything else is leaving (though this scenario is frequently common for people in general, so I try not to take this one too seriously)

If I bother to think about it, I could find more examples

The question is, do I hope and have faith for a better future, or keep remaining depressed so if there is a crash that puts all in the same dire situation, I won't get angry for being wrong in having faith and hope in what amounted to nothing. (Like relationships) That seems to be the worst insult anybody could fathom.

21. Heart near-miss
I was a day away from a probably fatal heart attack, and discovered
it by pure luck (2 stents of the kind they now say might fail at any
second, but hey, I'm still here 3 years later).

German, French, Belgian, and Italian drivers (scarier than the cardiac
thing).

Losing parents before their time.

Other than that, I've been VERY lucky.
