Griffith Park Fire Threatening the Observatory
 All those poor animals in the park too... lots of wildlife there.

4 inches of rain since last July - prime tinder box conditions...

Goddamn.

2. It looks like the observatory and zoo are safe for now.
They beat it back there, and at the edge of Los Feliz.

I watched it burn all afternoon from my office window, and now that I'm home (and closer than I'd like), I can hear the water-dumping helicopters working away. We've got some awesome, hard-working firefighters here in SoCal.

4. The firefighters are amazing.
It's really astounding that they can keep it away from structures, considering how crispy everything is. And the weather conditions are completely working against them.

This (and the Burbank fire a month or so ago) are my first experiences with wildfires.

OH GEEZ...KTLA just reported that the fire was caused by the injured guy. He fell asleep while smoking a cigarette. Why would someone smoke in these conditions?? For pete's freakin' sake.

5. Because he was homeless and lived in the park.
There are a LOT of homeless folks living in Griffith Park. :-(

Stupid, but unintentional. I hope they're able to get it under control overnight.

7. Oooh
I missed the "homeless" part.

And yet, very little sympathy here. I don't care where you live, don't light *anything* when surrounded by crunchy brush during a red-flag warning. Not rocket science.

3. So uncool.
It looked like they had it at least somewhat contained earlier, but now, not so much.

Very scary.

6. It made an abrupt 180
In both direction and intensity. :-(

We could see the smoke heading down Vermont on the way to dinner. When the weather is clear, we can see L.A. from just around the corner.

9. OH...MY. GOD.
I just drove home from work...taking the 101 from downtown into the SF Valley. The flames are entirely visible from the 101 and I have to say, that's got to be one of the scariest things I've ever seen. I nearly crashed my car. (ok, not really, but I'm still shaking). It looks horrifying.

The flames cover the entire ridgeline just to the right of the Hollywood sign, and they are snaking down the hill into Los Feliz. And dear God, those flames are HIGH.

:scared:

10. Question: Is this fire going to threaten the Highland Park area?
If so, I need to call my sister-in-law and get her to come down here for a few days.

12. I'm in Highland Park, and it does not seem in danger at this time.
The fire is several miles away. Wind-blown embers could always spread the fire, but judging by the smoke, it's not headed in this direction. It is an eerie view however; the flames look a lot closer than they are.

My husband has called his sister and extended the invite anyway!

Be safe.

(We are in Irvine).

13. I don't think so
at least, not at this point.

If you look at a map, so far it's still in Griffith Park, with the 134 serving as the northern boundary and Los Feliz Boulevard to the South. Sections of both of those are closed. As far as I know the 5 is still open. It hasn't gotten that far east. In fact, from what I could see, it looked like it was moving west.

Hope that helps.

11. Aw, shit. That means it's moving west.
shit shit shit shit shit

The copters have just been non-stop tonight hauling water, and it doesn't seem to be doing much good.

Looks like I'll be up late.

Glad you got home from work OK.

14. Yes, it appeared that way
You're in Hollywood, right?

My thoughts are with you, for sure. Hopefully they can get this sucker under control as the temperatures fall tonight.

16. Yup.
As long as the winds behave, I should be OK. Hopefully.
