"The Answer" by Sarah Mclachlan - good first dance song for wedding reception?
I have a knack for lyrics, I can pick them up on one listen to a song. Amazes the hell out of my buddy.

This brings up an interesting dilemma. While I don't really care about lyrics to songs as much as I do the melody and music within a song (I worry more about what each instrument is doing before worrying about the words, which might be why I pick up lyrics so damn fast), I am very aware of the meaning behind words and thus am having a hard time chosing a "first dance" song. While most people pick songs they like without regard to what the song is saying, I tend to be anal about what the words of the song I choose might say. I don't know if everyone thinks like this, if its normal or compeletely music-snobbish.

For example, I know there are cases of people using songs like "Every Breath You Take" by The Police
Every move you make
Every vow you break
Every smile you fake
Every claim you stake
Ill be watching you

creepy

and there are people who used Garth Brooks' "The Dance", beautiful song no doubt but it features these lyrics:
And now I'm glad I didn't know
The way it all would end the way it all would go
Our lives are better left to chance I could have missed the pain
But I'd of had to miss the dance

basically, a song predicting the split-up at the wedding reception!

So, anyway, again, maybe I am being anal. But I just want to see what you guys think of this song. I am very set on trying to aviod the cliche songs.

If you don't know "The Answer", you can watch it on YouTube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4NiP1vz7LKA
someone set it to a video they made with clips from some soap opera or something.

Here are the lyrics:

I will be the answer
At the end of the line
I will be there for you
While you take the time
In the burning of uncertainty
I will be your solid ground
I will hold the balance
If you can't look down

If it takes my whole life
I won't break, I won't bend
It will all be worth it
Worth it in the end
Cause I can only tell you what I know
That I need you in my life
When the stars have all gone out
You'll still be burning so bright

Cast me gently
Into morning
For the night has been unkind
Take me to a
Place so holy
That I can wash this from my mind
The memory of choosing not to fight

If it takes my whole life
I won't break, I won't bend
It will all be worth it
Worth it in the end
'Cause I can only tell you what I know
That I need you in my life
When the stars have all burned out
You'll still be burning so bright

Cast me gently
Into morning
For the night has been unkind

Mainly, its some of the imagery of rough times that have me concerned. Especially the last line, "For the night has been unkind". In one way it reads almost like wedding vows, with promises to stick it out through tough times that might come up; but on the other it seems like it could be about a rocky relationship. What are your thoughts, DU?

1. I can see your point...here's the one we used, and the runner-up:
We decided to do our first dance to Mary Chapin Carpenter's version of John Lennon's "Grow Old With Me." Of course, anything Carpenter sings is beautiful, but just thinking about this one still gets me a little choked up after all these (well, 7) years. The very close runner-up was Trout Fishing In America's "No Matter What Goes Right," which takes the point of view that the hardships a relationship goes through make it stronger in the end. Both lyrics are below:

Grow Old With Me:

Grow old along with me
The best is yet to be
When our time has come
We will be as one
God bless our love
God bless our love
Grow old along with me
Two branches of one tree
Face the setting sun
When the day is done
God bless our love
God bless our love
Spending our lives together
Man and wife together
World without end
World without end
Grow old along with me
Whatever fate decrees
We will see it through
For our love is true
God bless our love
God bless our love

No Matter What Goes Right:

If the mountains never crumble,
And the rivers don't run dry,
The oceans keep on pounding,
The sun stays in the sky;
If apples keep on falling,
And three and two is five,
I'll still be loving you
No matter what goes right.
If the world keeps on turning,
And snow keeps falling white,
Fire keeps on burning,
And daylight follows every night;
If flowers bloom in springtime,
And birds remember how to fly,
I'll still be loving you
No matter what goes right.

<Chorus>
No matter what goes right,
I'll still be loving you;
No matter what goes right,
I will stand by you.
And when couples fight their troubles,
It unites their hearts,
When the good times roll,
they can drift apart;
I'll still be loving you
No matter what goes right.

When all this work is over,
And my ship comes sailing in,
You'll always be my lover,
You'll always be my friend.
If the stars up in the heavens
Keep on shining clear and bright,
I'll still be loving you,
No matter what goes right.

<Chorus>

<Tasteful guitar solo>

<Chorus>

2. We went with "In My Life"
but I love that version of "Grow Old With Me" too. Her voice really does a great job with those lyrics.
