Gilmore Girls Gets Cancelled-last show is May15th
*My wife started watching this while she was home on bedrest and fell immediately in love with the show. While we were at home with Josie we basically watched the entire series on ABC Family repeats and digital cable. To this day when the theme song comes on (Carole King) our daughter stops in her tracks and watches the TV*

The question of whether Gilmore Girls will be returning for its eight season has finally been answered. After seven seasons, CW and Warner Bros. have decided to end the drama-comedy featuring Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel. The last episode, which is appropriately entitled “Bon Voyage,” will air on May 15.

According to a statement released by CW and Warner Bros., "Announcing the final season of Gilmore Girls is truly a sad moment for everyone at The CW and Warner Bros. Television. This series helped define a network and created a fantastic, storybook world featuring some of television's most memorable, lovable characters…We would also like to thank the critics and Gilmore fans for their passionate support and promise to give this series the send off it deserves."

The future of Gilmore Girls has been in question for some time now. In fact, its current season seven has undergone some off cam changes with the departure of series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino and husband/collaborator Daniel Palladino, who has been substituted by David Rosenthal. In addition, there has been a significant drop in the ratings, most apparent in its April 24 episode, which garnered only 4 million viewers.

Gilmore Girls is an hour-long series that began in October 2000. It follows a single mother Lorelai Gilmore, played by Graham, and her daughter Lorelai “Rory” Gilmore, played by Bledel. Set in the fictional town of Stars Hollow, Connecticut, the series explores themes of friendship, love, family and other social issues. Other cast members include Scott Patterson as Luke Danes, Melissa McCarthy as Sookie St. James, Keiko Agena as Lane Kim, Yanic Truesdale as Michel Gerard, Liza Weil as Paris Geller, Sean Gunn as Kirk Gleason, Kelly Bishop as Emily Gilmore, and Matt Czuchry as Logan Huntzberger.

2. Me too
It's something that my daughters and I watch together and it's actually been a springboard for a lot of mother-daughter discussions about life, love, ambition and girl power :) I'm curious to see how they end it.

4. I hope the ending isn't cliche
like a wedding or something.

My daughter never really got into the show, but I saw a lot of myself and my daughter in those two characters.

I wouldn't mind seeing Lorelei and Luke kissing and making up though

In the "next week on..." scenes. Completely ruined it for me. :(

9. My wife-weeks ago- predicted the ending
well we weren't sure if this was the last season but she predicted the following

"Bon Voyage" refers to Lorelei and Luke sailing off together in his boat.

Yes they did spoil it a bit last night. I agree with your other post about this season-it became way too much about Luke/Lorelei and Lorelei/Chris and not enough of the townspeople. Face it Kirk sold this show at the beginning-the town hall meetings too were a hoot.

10. Totally agree
As soon as Luke started talking about the boat trip, I KNEW April wouldn't be able to go, and when she bailed, eventually Luke would get around to asking Lorelai, so they could "sail off into the sunset" at the end of the season (little did I know it would be the end of the series).

The thing I admired about Amy's talent was her ability to tell a story with excellent pacing. She managed to get the drama moving every week and yet STILL have time to work in numerous storylines/characters/funny bits involving the townspeople. Nobody else has been able to do that. And nobody else can seamlessly integrate those famous pop culture references without sounding forced. The other thing no other writers seem to be able to do is wrap up a scene gracefully--I've noticed that this past season, the end of every act (before each commercial) doesn't end with a funny or clever bit of dialogue--it just dies out instead.

Ach, don't get me started. I've been ripping on this season for months. These lame-o Amy replacements give me too much material...

12. We both commented about how the last few shows have been like the old ones
at least it wasn't two people sitting and looking at each other in a maudalin tragedy scenario.

The fact that they are taking it out with one big town get together in the square is predictable but yeah it is the end of the series.

I wonder if Kurt will still be in the box sitting there watching all of it. BTW-he was on the original as the cable guy and they added the character for him.

Last night Luke and Lorelei were at the same spot that they broke up at before AND it looked like that is where they kiss (per the preview).

I never really liked Logan anyway. Jess (Rory's actual real life boyfriend until the beginnig of this season) predicted that this would be the last one. My wife and I hadn't heard anything about it since I looked around at GG sites a month or so ago-BAM! it hit us out of the blue.

13. Right
I actually backed up to the beginning of last night's show to see who wrote it, because it wasn't half bad. Still not Amy, but palatable--had a couple of good lines in there.

Good point about the breakup location--I didn't catch that.

You know who I really miss but didn't think I would? Taylor. So underused this season, except when he did the haybale maze...and yet in that ep he WON the battle--what's up with that?! Taylor's supposed to be sublimely ridiculous, and his ideas/plans for the town even more so. And I couldn't stand how many times they did the Taylor-doing-something-stupid-so-Luke-goes-outside-and-yells-at-him scene. The substitute writers didn't even know how to play THOSE right--they just threw a scene like that in because that's what Taylor and Luke always do. They've turned into 2-D characters...

Logan--THANK YOU!! I didn't like him either! I read somewhere that he lasted this long because the producers liked the actor so much and wanted to keep him around, never mind the storyline that would accurately portray how Rory would act. It seemed like Amy was setting him up to be a big "what was I thinking with that rich spoiled bastard" regret for Rory, not the guy she truly loved. A good friend of mine and I swearr that Rory was supposed to end up with Marty--poor but kind. Ah, poor naked guy in the hallway, we hardly knew ye...

16. Poor Marty
What was up with bringing him back to be jerked around by Logan and Rory again. I thought she and Marty were good together, in a "Ugly" Betty/ Henry way.

But Rory turned into a thoughtless jerk, when she and Logan got together. Lorelai turned into a sullen passive aggressive jerk, when Luke's daughter (and Christopher) came around. It seems like Amy really liked the actors that played Logan and Christopher. To hell with the integrity of the female characters.

I just watched the pilot again and it is interesting to see the change in Rory and Lorelai. Rory was much less brittle and Lorelai had an aura of humor and intelligence. Woops.

18. I LOVED Marty
I loved how he had to work at Yale to help pay his tuition, scamming the leftovers from fancy functions. And the way Logan and his cronies in the Life and Death Brigade picked on him was a great way to show what callous assholes they were.

I agree Rory changed and not for the better--I would hope that the original planned character development arc was for her to have her head turned by the pretty rich boy and then have her heart broken--or at least "wake up" and get back to being Rory in some way.

The Girls' personality changes seemed to coincide with the time that Amy and David had less to do with the show--they were writing fewer episodes around then. I always wondered if the network was putting pressure on them to do different things with the characters that weren't necessarily in sync with who Lorelai and Rory actually "were", if you know what I mean.

I'll just wait for the tell-all memoir by Amy!

Since this thread is still going

They just completely cut Deluise out of a check by not even having him on the show last night. They mentioned him (T.J.) but that was it.

and finally-I am so glad that someone else thought the show was really hurting the last two years WHAT THE HELL WAS UP WITH LULU AND HER FRIEND??? Where did they get those completely obnoxious characters from and why would our Rory have anything to do with them? I never understood that at all that was time that could have included more Kirk (who they literally wrote walk out parts for at times) and Taylor and the rest of the townfolk.

39. I'm cracking up that this thread is so active
GG fans are nothing if not highly analytical and very protective of their Girls!

Augh, don't even get me started on how many characters were tossed by the wayside so the show could focus on The Lives and Loves of Dobie Gilmore (both of 'em)--T.J., Kirk, Taylor, Mrs. Kim (LOVE her!)--damn, even Lane was reduced to a bit part (and :wtf: was all that crap about her having sex once and hating it? they dropped that thread too--along with hundreds of others).

Yeah, I remember when the season started and exec producer David Rosenthal (or maybe it was the head of The CW--I forget) beamed that Rory was going to be getting a whole new set of friends for the season, etc., like that was a good thing. Made me suspect they were going to jettison Paris, too (but they could NEVER get rid of Paris!!) Then she met up with those two bubbleheads, hung out with them for a bit, and then zoom--under the bus with both of them and like everybody else, reduced to bit parts when they needed filler. x(

I still can't figure out where they thought they were going by bringing Marty back and then having that non-drama of him and Rory hiding their former friendship from the girlfriend. And then--pfft--gone.

Again, I say, :wtf:

I don't want to know what happens to Lorelai, Luke, Rory, or anybody else until next week's episode.

Yes, I watch it, and will miss Lorelai and Rory's patented rapid-fire banter.

She's just sick about it. For a kinda mushy dramedy (not really my preferred TV viewing), it was pretty good. Great dialogue.

8. I'm so torn about this
GG was one of my favorite shows of all time...that is, when Amy Sherman-Palladino was at the helm. This past year was a travesty, with shows created by people who thought they could write and direct like she did, but COULDN'T. (As a writer, I'm very sensitive to how successfully a show is written, even more so than acted or directed, and only Amy knew how to do it.) Consequently, the show was a mere shadow of its former self, and in a way I'm glad they're pulling the plug--I couldn't stand to watch another season like this one.

The one thing I am pissed off about was the new exec producer said he would bring Amy back to write and produce (and possibly direct) the series finale. What happened to that promise? :(

14. Bittersweet.
On the one hand, I think this season had a steep climb to get the show away from the abrasive, cloying mess of last season. For the most part (Christopher plotline and Logan excluded), this season was far and away better than last year. The pacing is off and the language isn't fast enough, but the show was coming around.

On the other hand, the show is tired. I know I'm in the minority, but I think Amy Palladino ruined the show by turning the Gilmore Girls into jerks. There was a hint that the plot with Luke would turn to the "Lorelai is traveling the world and maybe selling her inn" possibility, which would have created enough drama. Instead, we got Luke's daughter who (although cute and smart) was the source of so much immature stupidity. The show was ruined at that point and I think this season was wasted trying to recover from Palladino's mistakes.

If it were two years ago, I would have been sad about this. But I think the Gilmore Girls are done. If the show was focused on the always superior to the girls townfolks, I think it might have had more promise. Rory and Lorelai were always the most boring parts of the show for me.

But quite frankly, I was very glad to see the events of last season. It was nice to see Rory struggle and stall out for a bit. Made her much more human, I thought.

From a sweet, smart girl into a neurotic, whiny person that quits free college because someone hurt her wittle feelings. :eyes:

They should have turned the show into "Mrs. Kim and Lane" two seasons ago. :)

They usually do that in the summer anyway, but this time it looked so final.

The outdoor street set they used is one of my favorite areas here on the lot- very historic - many classics were filmed there of course, including Music Man, the Waltons, etc.

20. Sorry, I don't have any inside info
But, 7 years is a good long run for a TV series, the actors might just be ready to move on, and like it says, the ratings have been down this year. It will still make tons of $$$ in syndication I'm sure.

I had the pleasure of sitting near Alexis Bleidel (sp?) several times in our cafeteria- she is a lovely young woman. I had seen most of the rest of the cast too and like I said, I walked through that Stars Hollow outdoor street set all the time. They had it set up for a big party a few weeks ago, and I assumed it was a "wrap party" but wasn't sure it was the final wrap.

On the bright side, they are starting production on a film remake of "Get Smart" with Steve Carrell and Anne Hathaway. I hope to get some sightings of them in the next few months!

30. Absolutely right
I was actually hoping they'd end it this season instead of squeezing out an eighth. Lauren Graham and Alexis Bleidel are both establishing movie careers, anyway. And I think I read something like LG saying the schedule was too harsh--long days, no time off, she missed some milestones in her friends' and relatives' lives, etc.

Glad to hear AB is a nice person! I'm always afraid those who seem sweet onscreen are harpies in real life.

Oooh I'm not too sure I want to see Get Smart remade, but I LOOOOOVE Steve Carrell and Anne Hathaway--thanks for the news!

23. It ran its course. It had to end.
Rory graduates from college, she declines Logan's proposal, Paris is moving away to go to Harvard Med, Christopher and Loreli seem to have come to terms with their relationship, and Luke finally got his head back together after the whole April thing and he and Loreli are ready to renew their relationship.

Another season would not be necessary
