I'm in a New York state of mind . . . hotel recommendations in Midtown, reasonably priced?
Our sixth wedding anniversary is coming up, and we're making plans to shop and sightsee in The Big Apple (probably in mid-June).

What are your recommendations for reasonably-priced hotels/motels in Midtown, New York DUers?

1. Reasonably priced New York Hotel?
Best laugh I've had all day.

Good luck with that.

2. I hate to say this, but there are no reasonably priced hotels in Midtown.
You may find better deals in the theater district (30's) but I would recommend you check hotels.com or priceline to see if you can get any specials.

Good luck! :hi:

I'll give them a look-see. :)

We're looking forward to visiting again. Our last trip was after 9/ll.

come back and give us some names of hotels. Some of us may have some feedback about specific places. :)

6. We don't want to stay in Hoboken, and the Parker Meridien is too pricey
We'd like something in price maybe halfway between the two.

Here's some offerings from hotels.com:

Hotel Pennsylvania: $237.15/night

Radford Lexington: $219.00/night

Hilton Rockefeller Center: $259.00/night

Wellington: $259.00/night

Amsterdam Court: $270.00/night

New Yorker Ramada: $239.00/night

Bentley Hotel: $263.50/night

Dream: $251.10/night

Hotel Alexander: $129.00/night

The Carlton on Madison: $254.00/night

The Marcel: $259.00/night

Holiday Inn Midtown: $251.00/night

Helmsley Midtown: $230.00/night

Park 79: $242.00/night

********************************************************************
Just to name a few. :)

13. You can't go wrong with the
Hilton at Rock Center or Helmsley Midtown. I've never heard anything bad about either one. The hilton is in a good convenient location too.

The Carlton is supposed to be a really nice place, but I only know that third hand so I'll stop short of recommending them.

I know it's not exactly midtown, but here's something else too:

$25 a night for a private room.

26. Wow, that is REALLY uptown
We're just looking for a nice, moderately-priced room where we can hang on hats, rest our heads and enjoy a nice breakfast buffet.

If it's in a realatively good neighborhood, near the train stations, and the doesn't look like Skid Row, we're happy. :)

you should consider staying at international house. they have a few hotel style rooms that are moderately priced. however, they are uptown.

8. Thanks, lioness! Uptown is a consideration
We're taking Amtrak up on a Friday morning, and leaving Sunday afternoon, so we were thinking Midtown to be close to either Grand Central or Penn. I'll take a look at International House.

New York City holds special memories for Hubby and I. The first time he said "I love you" was at Radio City Music Hall, during intermission at a matinee performance of the Christmas show. :)

11. Check promotional deals -
Credit Cards, "Air Miles" or rental car accounts, AAA, some other insurance or finance type companies, Alumni associations or professional clubs, heck, even your own employer may have promotional specials that you can use to drop the price of your stay.
Also check some of the non-brand hotels, bed and breakfasts, or other alternatives near a subway or another transportation hub that allows you to get to where you want to get to easily. (go online and check for the schedules, I'm sure if San Diego has an online Metro bus and trolley scheduling tool, you should be able to find one for New York City and environs) Be sure to also check for crime rates in the area; you might find a "pretty li'l cheap place" out of the main tourist areas, but it might not be in a neighborhood that could be considered relatively safe for non-natives.
If all else fails, get a range of dates you can work with and check places like Priceline or Orbitz. You can sometimes get a very nice deal so long as it's "off season".

I have to schedule my customer's travel all the time at work - I'm a bit of an administrative assistant as well as an analyst for him - and even though he has the benefit of using GSA rates, I still have to keep location, transportation routing, crime and parking availability in mind when I send him off to the sites for his high level coffee clatches and information meetings.

Hubby already ran a query for Amtrak fares in mid-June. He could search for hotels, as well.

28. There's the Larchmont in Greenwich Village...
Edited on Wed May-09-07 06:09 PM by haele
http://www.larchmonthotel.com/rates.htm - rates look resonable and the reviews are generally good - it's rather nice looking old hotel converted to bed and breakfast, but the bathrooms are common (and apparently very clean), which tends to turn off many people.
I love bed and breakfasts and a shared bathroom doesn't bother me one bit - I don't go on vacation with my honey to spend a lot of time in a bathroom :).

"Stay The Night" is apparently a converted Victorian Townhouse (with private jacuzzis in some rooms!) off Central Park near the museums.

All occupancy rates are subject to change
State and local taxes may apply
Accommodations: Rooms
There are 7 guest accommodations
Single occupancy rate is between $ 75.00 and $ 205.00
Double occupancy rate is between $ 75.00 and $ 205.00
The rate for each additional person is $ 20.00
Other Accommodations: Aditional Apartments
I have a full range of apartments, from studios to three bedrooms.

It looks absolutely charming. They serve a continental breakfast. I'm definitely looking into this one, too!

I went to New York City twice: Once in 1985 and again in 1987, on a detail to the U.S. Mission to the United Nations. I had a room at the Summit Hotel at 51st and Lexington, about a fifteen-minute walk to the Mission. After being in NYC for two weeks, I learned my way around the city, knew most of the great hotels, the transit system, the best shopping, wonderful restaurants, and even brought groceries at Gristede's to take back to my room (it saved on per diem). That was twenty years ago, and I'm a bit rusty on my New York knowledge.

Thank you so much for alerting me to these bed-and-breakfast inns. They're a wonderful alternative to a traditional hotel experience.

Also, it hasn't been reported as having bed bugs -- I checked, but dang it I can't find the site that lists known infestations... you should check into that though, wouldn't want to bring back some nasty bugs.

several DUers stayed there for an NYC meetup a couple of years ago. We actually had to sneak up to their room; no guests allowed, kind of like the dorms at Liberty U. :eyes:

The Beacon if you can get one of the $200 rooms. Comes with Kitchenette. I always stay there and there's a beautiful sunrise view of Central Park. On Saturday Night Live, they always show the entrance to the night club next door during the Roxbury Boys sketch. I laughed out loud when I saw my beloved Beacon in that sketch. My date and I ordered a full spaghetti dinner from the Italian deli down the street at 4 a.m. and had it delivered to the room with a six-pack of Heineken. That's what I call civilized living.
