Tammy Faye says "good bye" to fans.

This is so sad. She's losing her battle to cancer.

If any of you have seen "The Eyes Of Tammy Faye", you'll know why I have such a different view of her than back in the Jessica Hawn/PTL days.

God Bless You, Tammy. I hope you're not in pain.

:loveya:

1. I didn't know much about her (apart from the PTL scandal) until I saw
'Eyes..' She seems like a genuine -if charmingly eccentric- person. May her transition be a peaceful one....

4. She seems like a real fun person to be around.
I loved what she said about gay people in that film.

She's really earned the hearts of us queenz.

...spreading love instead of hate.

5. This is so sad.
A few months back, I FINALLY saw "The Eyes of Tammy Faye", that great documentary about her. And watching it, I discovered, once again, why I've come to like her so much. And you're right...she's much different today than in the PTL days. And what is remarkable about her (and her husband) even then was that they both didn't hate gay people...I didn't sense the same kind of glorified "God hates fags" stuff that the likes of Jerry Falwell, etal has preached.

This news is so awful. I, also, hope that she's not in pain.

7. She was wildy eccentric...
and a complete disaster in the hair/make-up department, but she really won me over with her attitude towards gays and lesbians. I came to really look forward to seeing her interiew on Larry King -- a real original. I saw an article her son wrote in which he said Christianity really needs to get off the whole "gays are bad" thing, and called for a return to the basics of Christianity -- compassion, tolerance, justice, and care for the poor. Color me impressed. :)

She's a little zany, but mostly harmless and kind.

11. One Punk Under God
If you can catch it, it's on Sundance or IFC -- can't remember.

One Punk Under God is a documentary series about their son, Jay Bakker. He has a a couple of visits with her that are really sweet.

18. It was on Sundance and it was pretty decent show
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0892398/

I found it interesting that Tammy Faye kept in touch wih her son but Jim seemed like he had moved on to a new family and couldn't be bothered with Jay. I liked the episode where Jay went to PTLand (the amusement park the PTL club had) and talked about all the memories he had of this now defunct amusing park

I think that Jimbo was the real weasel, and Tammy Faye went along for the ride with her eyes wide shut.

The son seems to have turned out well.

14. I owe her and her Jim a lot.
I finally lost my faith in the lord for good while watching the PTL Club during an extraordinary LSD trip in 1982.

During an earlier LSD trip, I wrote an article for my college newspaper about masturbating to the PTL club. The article was a big success, and people still mention it to me now and then more than 25 years later.

I'll miss having her on the planet.

32. I met Tammy Faye around 9 years ago
Edited on Thu May-10-07 02:13 AM by enigmatic
I was working as a Banquet Captain at a hotel in Phoenix, and Tammy Faye was in town to open a brand-new swap meet (I know, I know; hey, it's Phoenix!). We had a room set up for a Press Conference she was going to do for "The Eyes Of Tammy Faye" for the local TV stations, and I and a co-worker got to escort her around the property and make sure she was taken care of.

I couldn't believe how tiny she was; really tiny. And beneath the make-up, she was actually quite pretty. My co-worker loved Tammy Faye, and when we went to pick her up and take her back to the hotel they both got along famously, sounding like (slightly raunchy) old friends in the van; it was hilarious to listen to.

She was incredibly nice to us and everybody else she came in contact that day in the hotel, and I got my own hug and peck on the cheek at the end of her stay. My co-worker did too, and they were both crying (and laughing; he was 6'4 and towered over her) as they said good-bye. it actually choked me up, too.

I'm really sorry to hear this, and I wish her the safest (and painless) passage possible.
