I think it's called The Butterfly Effect.

Yes, Ashton Kutcher sucks. Yes, that Seventies Show is as washed up as Frasier and ER. Yes. he's doing some stupid MTV show. Yes, he's banging a dessicated leather mannequin.

But the preview looked pretty good. Sort of had a Rod Serlingish type look to it.

And I've been wrong about vapid heartthrob actors before. Pitt was good in Twelve Monkeys, Depp's been good in everything post Jump Street.

Anyone else going to go see it?

The previews really look promising.

2. When in doubt, check the writer's and director's resumes
Their only screen credits so far: Final Destination 2.

Not a ringing endorsement. Pitt and Depp choose good people to work with, and I'd hardly call Johnny "vapid".

3. I'll wait for reviews from people I know
I just can't imagine him in a serious role.

5. I don't want to give him the benefit of the doubt
but I'll probably end up renting it. It did look interesting.

My siblings and I were arguing over whether or not this is loosely based on a short story of the same name. thought the author might have been Ray Bradbury but werent sure. the premis of the short story is about a company that can take people back in time but they can't touch or disturb anything. This one customer goes back in time to the dinosaur age and gets off the path and accidently steps on a butterfly. when they return to the present, things are decidedly different. Does that sound right? what I'm wondering is if it's based on the once you change something in the past it affects much in the future.

7. I remember that story
I think you are right about Ray Bradbury. If they could only do justice to the story.....but the trailers look good.

15. TBE is NOT based on the Bradbury story
Which is called "The Sound of Thunder".

However, Peter Hyams IS making a movie of "TSOT" and it will be out soon too.

9. Ashton Kutcher in a dramatic role
Acting should be a prerequisite for actors.

kinda looked hot in the preview.

12. Punk'd [MTV Show] was cancelled by Kutcher himself
He cancelled his own show after 2 seasons. It was a good show for teenagers and preteens like myself.

14. Probably will wait for rental but previews do look alright
Pitt and Depp are not only good looking guys but they could certainly act. Besides "that 70's show" and "dude where's my car" ashton can't act. He needs to stick to the stoner friend role. I hope he surprises me though.

17. What are you talking about!?!
"Chasing Liberty" was the movie of a generation!

J/K...yer absolutely right. I always get movie passes for Xmas and invariably they sit in my valet until March.

As for Mssr. Kutcher, I'm always intrigued by time travel movies, but this feels like "Somewhere in Time" for the Lizzie McGuire set. The presense of not just Ashton (do you know he was plucked out of midwestern obscurity by some casting director visiting his in-laws? Yet another reason to fake illness during the holidays), but the fat guy they get when the "Varsity Blues" fat guy is unavailable, in goth drag, no less!

Seeing the preview for this frustrates me the way the preview for the new Adam Sandler lobotomy frustrates me: In that case, the premise is a romantic comedy about a guy who is in love with a girl who loses her short term memory every day. Yeah, it's hokey, but could be a sweet premise ala "Groundhog Day." But like TBE, you just know they'll botch it (all apologies to you Happy Madison fans, but I completely don't see it).

And Ginger Snaps 2 can't even get an American release date! Argh!

19. The trailer played before a movie I saw recently
and my husband and I looked at one another, and both rolled our eyes skyward. Besides having the "Tell the whole story in the trailer" disease (apparently endemic - what ever happened to 60-second trailers?), it looked overtly hysteric, overwrought, and hopelessly illogical.

Even if I were into 20-something dude types, the movie didn't appeal to me on the basis of the trailer. Which lasted approximately ten minutes. It went ON and ON and ON...
