New 'Anti-Abortion Pill' Kills Mother, Leaves Fetus Alive
New 'Anti-Abortion Pill' Kills Mother, Leaves Fetus Alive
May 10, 2006

NEW YORK—Pro-life advocates celebrated approval of the new anti-abortion drug UR-86 by the Food and Drug Administration Tuesday, calling it a "safe and effective method" for terminating pregnant women while leaving their unborn children unharmed.

Pfizer, manufacturer of UR-86—dubbed the "last-morning-ever pill"—said the drug is intended only for occasions when the mind-set or politics of the mother threaten the life of the fetus.

"This drug is designed for extreme cases in which the mother cannot or should not be saved, or when her health has been placed before that of her unborn child," Pfizer spokesman Anthony Wright said.

The orally ingested drug first tests for the presence of a fetus. If the outcome is positive, a near-lethal dose of barbiturates is released, which induces a coma in the expectant mother until the child is born, at which point a second, fatal dose is released.

4. The 'adequate safeguards' paragraph had me rolling.
Tuesday night, South Dakota legislators introduced a bill to impose a five-day waiting period for teenage girls and women before they can buy the pill, claiming its use does not adequately safeguard the lifestyle of the father, the laundry of the father, or the favorite meals of the father. The legislators cited Pfizer's own published list of side effects of UR-86, which include domestic messiness, already-born-child neglect, and inadequate stocking of the fridge.

5. that's terrific! And kind of them to include the teenage girls in there as well.
Even though many of them probably don't grocery shop and do housework!

22. I recall a few years back a real story about a mother who was
in a coma and the doctors were talking about keeping her alive until the baby was born. Everyone freaked out and the fetus died anyway.

16. yes, but satirical pieces like this bring that fact to the attention of more moderate folks
You, know, the kind of people who wouldn't think about reproductive issues at all until they affect them.

One thing I thought of when I read this was if this might make some men think about what would happen in a country where the government and the religious right make choices that would be best left up to father's to decide. I daresay if they were faced with the life of their wife and the life their unborn baby, they'd pick the former in most cases.

17. That's a good point. Still, it's a sad commentary on how much control the religious right has when..
auch a story isn't all that farfetched.

19. Yes.
When someone I've been friends with for years honestly says that he would not support an abortion when the life of the mother would be in jeopardy...it's the height of sexism, really, and it makes me very sad.

20. omg. What would make someone come to the conclusion that this was good?
Has there EVER been a time in history when a child was considered more important than the mother? I mean, really, not so long ago, parents often outlived a number of their children. Would men really want to be saddled with caring for their babies alone because the child was deemed more important than his wife? And how would that father-child relationship fare?

21. It's the inherent sexism prevalant in many Christians.
They believe this even if the child is likely to die. This is the effect that fundamentalist Christianity is having on our country. It sickens me. :(
