Fox News disses Canadian Progressive Band "Rush": Do they ever do their homework?

Rush is back. The big hair, fake falsetto heavy metal group that made the 1980s so irrelevant musically sold 84,000 copies for Atlantic Records last week with a new album called "Snakes & Arrows." Never underestimate the low standards of the buying public, I guess. Journey, Poison, shoulder pads and perms shouldn't be too far behind at this rate.

Ummm.... "heavy metal"? Journey, Poison?

Have these people even ever heard a Rush song besides "Tom Sawyer"?

Comparing one of the great progressive bands active since the sixties to POISON?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rush_(band)

I'm not crazy about some of their liberatarian/rightish themse, but they are an excellent band, and they have only had one hiatus in the late 90s after the deaths of Peart's daughter and wife.

As for taste, what would Fox consider the bellwether of good taste?

White Power teen duo Prussian Blue?

Britney?

I hate Fox News.

2. "Falsetto" and "big hair" are also inaccurate labels...
...unless I've missed some of their music and photos. They had long hair, not big, and Geddy's voice may have sounded like a squirrel going though a car wash, but it wasn't falsetto.

3. Geddy's voice is an acquired taste at best...
...but if anything, Rush helped to alleviate some of the irrelevance of 80's rock.

Can you imagine Poison or Ratt doing a number like "Subdivisions" or "Limelight"?

LOL

And as a member of Gen-X, I dispute the allegation that the 80's were irrelevant musically. There was a lot of GREAT music in that period, across all genres.

4. Hmm. Relevance might not have been their strong suit...
...and "acquired taste" is an understatement, but Rush and Smashing Pumpkins could have been magnificent bands...with different singers.

14. Whatever....
RUSH is awesome due to music and lyrics, Getty's voice gives it style. Any change and they wouldn't be the same.

16. He's really grown into his voice as he has matured
By the time they did Roll the Bones (perhaps a bit sooner), he had actually learned to croon, and his dulcet tones are surprisingly good when he's calm and not belting it out. Exhibit A: Ghost of a Chance. I wish I could sing that good.

6. I just shot off an email to this joker:
I was just reading today's column and couldn't help but laugh when you demonstrated your ignorance about the band Rush. Big hair heavy metal group? Seriously, have you ever even heard a Rush song other than "Tom Sawyer"? Rush has released 19 studio albums since 1974, and no music fan worth their salt would ever confuse their music with the likes of Poison or any other metal band. Stick to shallow pop culture commentary, Mr. Friedman. You're far out of your depth as a music critic.

7. Thanks.
I found the comparison to Journey funny, too.

Another decidedly NON-heavy metal band known more for their power ballads and schmaltzy sentimentality than anything else (and yes, I love Journey when I'm in the mood for it, being a schmaltzy sentimentalist myself)...

9. The ignorance of the people at fox news never ceases to amaze me. I don't suppose
they realize that Rush has 23 gold records and 14 platinum (3 multi-platinum) records, making them one of the best-selling rock bands in history. Rush is fifth behind The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, KISS and Aerosmith for the most consecutive gold and platinum albums by a rock band. I don't know how they made the 80s "irrelevant musically".

10. Alright. That's it. NOW I'm offended!
Big hair?

Also, although they put out albums during the 1980's, they aren't exactly representative of the culture of the 1980's. Actually, I think of them more as a 70's band, although they've been active longer than 30 years. And heavy metal? No. Try prog rock, morons. And this has what to do with Journey and Poison?

Not to mention that, although off topic re: Rush, the 1980's were not "musically irrelevant".

I always hated Faux, but now I know for a fact that they're full of shit.

11. What idiots!
I may be a homer Rush fan but Snakes & Arrows is an awesome album. The songwriting and musicianship are of high quality and to mention Poison in the same sentence as Rush is blasphemy!

15. "Low standards of the buying public"?
With so much crap out there - whatever the likes of what is produced by 'American Idol' and so forth - he picks on Rush?

Mind you, Rush hasn't made an album worth a shit since 'Signals' in 1982. Then Terry Brown quit as their producer, and it was all boring and downhill (with the exception of a few cuts from 'Presto' and 'Counterparts'). But even the recent album's mediocrity is an elevation of most mass taste these days.

Despite Neil Peart's regrettable Ayn Rand affectations and lyrical pretensions, they have few instrumental peers and to be lumped in with the likes of butt-rock spandex clowns like Poison is grossly ignorant and tone deaf. But then again, consider the source.

17. The irony is that FOX News called the 80s "irrelevant". What about Reagan?
Edited on Wed May-09-07 09:20 PM by Alexander
Does that mean he was irrelevant too?

Seriously though. I'm seeing Rush in July. They kick ass.

18. um, yeah. a band with a 30 year history that still sells out arenas
I'm surprised he's so off target here, since no one caters more to the low standards of the buying public than Fox.

I'm anxiously waiting for the DVD-A release of Snakes & Arrows so I can enjoy it in high resolution surround sound.

19. Not only that, but Journey and Poison are already back!
Not only did they falsely present the type of band Rush is, they presented the additional falsity about Journey and Poison. These bands are back and have been touring, and if they did any research they would know that. And not only is Rush unlike those two bands, those two bands are unlike each other. Fox morans.

20. My Apologies, I meant to put "Progressive Rock Band" in the headline.
While Rush aren't exactly fascists, they're not really progressives, either. But they music they play does fall under the category of "progressive rock".

Sorry for the mistake and any confustion it might have caused.
