Poll question: Best Swedish Pop Band? (Focus on the 90's)
First off I must say that while I mostly listen to hard rock I dig the Euro Pop stuff too. Don't kill me, I'm excused, I lived in Central Europe for a LONG time in the 90's!

Let's start with this wonderful article:

http://www.sweden.se/templates/Article____5393.asp

"Also within that decade, kids who had watched ABBA on TV were growing up and forming their own bands. With perfect timing, European MTV was launched at the same time - giving European artists from outside the UK the same opportunities for exposure as the Anglo-Saxon countries. The children of ABBA were ready to take on the world. Roxette. Europe. Ace of Base. Rednex. The Cardigans. At the end of the Eighties, one Swedish band after the other appeared from nowhere, serving aces all over the international charts.

A climax came in the mid-Nineties. On Continental Top 20 Hits, a list of the top European songs, at one time nine of the 20 songs were Swedish. At numbers 1, 3, 4, 6, 8, 13, 16, 18 and 19 were Emilia, Roxette, Meja, The Cardigans, Jennifer Brown, Jessica Folcker and Eagle-Eye Cherry, a couple of them with two songs each."

Gotta LOVE the Swedes!

1. My fav? Tough call.
Historically? ABBA (But I voted Cardigans...I'm sorry).

90's: Cardigans.

But Eagle Eyed Cherry deserves props for a couple of rightious pop hits. You know Nena Cherry is his sis'. Buffalo Stance anyone?

6. Eagle Eye Cherry was pretty good...but Swedish?
I have that album...and its pretty good. But its tough to call this guy a Swede...even tho he lives there. Did he break in Sweden and was he produced by the Swedes? if so..ok..Swedish....

2. The Nomads
Edited on Sat Aug-02-03 09:18 PM by RationalRose
mid-'80s Swedish pop/garage band. I saw them in Amsterdam in the '80s with the Boston band The Lyres. They rocked! Here is a link to some information:

They were playing into the 90s I believe. Sorry I'm old and stuck in the 80s!

13. My thoughts exactly...
The Nomads, especially "Don't Tread on Me", but they're not exactly "pop", except in an alternate universe.

11. No. I'm a mutt.
Just heard some Swedish pop while channel surfing on the trip back from Naples (Where I have to go to co-host that little Liberal talk radio show).

OK...It was Ace of Base (the Sign) FOLLOWED by the Cardigans (Erase/Rewind http://www.alwaysontherun.net/card.htm#g2 ) both very slick pop tunes that just happen to have been popular in Poland when I just happened to live there.

Nostalgia struck like a hammer!

I suppose with my hair color there might be some Swedish but from what I've heard it's mostly Danish/Welsh.

5. Rednex was Swedish? No shit? Ace of Base?
I voted for the Cardigans, but some of these bands are pretty good....but I thought Ace of Base was a Danish band?

Then the Norwegians had Getaway People.

***on edit:
Oh crap, you said focus on the 90's....
Okay then, um...tentatively, the Cardigans.***

"Take on Me" alone trumps many 80's songs.
"You're all the things I've got to remember" awesome line, I think someone in my high school class used it for their senior quote.

And Morten is yumster.
Grrrrooowwwlll.

And the Getaway People are okay too (they're from Norway as well, yes?).
