1. Phillips 170B
If you can still get it. Phillips tends to cost a little more, but I tried the Magnavox (MAG series) and two in a row didn't perform up to spec.

3. My son mentioned a Samsung
with 500:1 resolution? I'm not sure - I know zip about computers. He's been looking at both Samsung and Compaq 17" monitors for around 500.00.

He's building a new computer for me and connecting this one to a network so we'll have 2 computers and my husband and I won't have to fight over whose been on longer. Yeah, we're like kids. I'm addicted to DU and he's always in my way burning CD's, emailing, or reading political stuff.

2. Quite frankly
I've looked into those also, and not too impressed.

My opinion is stick with the "old style" monitors. You can get some great deals. I got a 19" KDS flat screen for about $150. KDS is a Sony Trinitron knock off.

8. Most of my computer usage is
combat flight sims, to be honest. I run at 1600 x 1200 max color generation. I find that it's a hellva lot easier to see the little dots (bandits heading in) on a flat screen than on a LCD.

That's my get out, but you should take into consideration what you are going to use it for, and make your selection based on that.

I've had KDS monitors before (this one is 3 years old) and never a burp.

Check around, Best Buy or Circuit City, or go on line (although if you're buying a monitor, you really should actually see the picture before you buy).

4. Ihave several and they all work great. Go for 17" or more if you
can.

Anyway, LCD display units are great for a lot of reasons. No flickering so easy on the eyes, use much less electricity, generate very little heat, take up LOTS less room.

I've got Envision 17", Philips 15", and Envision 15".

I usually look seriously at price as the deciding factor, once I've decided on the models that meet the display size and features that are important.

I do strictly business work (no gaming) and basic photo editing (minor restoration of old photos) so I'm not concerned about any special requirements that might be needed for gaming and serious grpahics.

Also, warranty could be important, though my Philips is 3 1/2 years old, my 15" Envision is 2 1/2 years old, and my 17" Envision is 1 year old and I've had no problems with any of them.

9. I use a ViewSonic PF790
...it's a 19" that has served me well.
I also have a PCTV card (watch TV on your computer) that has an input for DVD players.
The quality is superb!!

10. Thanks...
That's the thing PCTV card. I'm very fortunate to have a kid who is computer savy - otherwise I'd be communicating with my fellow DU'ers via smoke signals.
