8. And you know, for this proud WI person living in NYC,
Edited on Fri Jan-16-04 12:26 AM by Rabrrrrrr
the cold here is negligible, except for the cold that was in my apartment earlier today.

Hell, I was out for hours today. It wasn't even below zero. In the eleven years I've lived here, I still can't believe how NYers freak out when it's only below freezing but not below zero.

Buncha weenies.

Hell, every winter in WI was way colder than this. I remember standing and waiting for the bus when it was -20, and -70 to -100 with the wind chill.

13. It's different
I grew up in Rocky Mountain -30 degrees walk-to-school-anyway toughen-up winters.

But it was DRY.

Here the humid island chill cuts right through you. I froze walking from the cab to my door tonight - one half block. It's different here. It's COLDER when it's cold. Temp is not the sole indicator.

16. Same thing moving to Iowa from Rocky Mtns.
The higher humidity here in Iowa makes this cold frigid air all the more cutting, right to the bone. Hate it.

I miss Rocky Mtn winters. The snow actually falls down instead of blowing horizontally, north to south.

17. I still say it was way worse in WI

than in NYC, even back in the really cold winter of '96-'97.

I've never experienced it being so cold here that I could hardly talk outside because my face was frozen; I had that pretty much every winter in WI. And I've never had my spit freeze before hitting the ground in NYC, and I often did in WI. And I've never had my nose boogers freeze up like I did in WI. And I spend a lot more time outside in NYC walking around getting to places than I ever walked around in WI.

I don't find NYC to be all that much more damp than WI, though I'm certain it's way more damp than the rocky mountain states - it's bone freakin' dry out there. Ouch!

But these NYC winters are way better than the WI ones.

25. Was exposed to sub-freezing temperatures for the first time
3 years ago in Dallas. About 10 F. I LOVED it outside. No need of hat, gloves, extra socks, or pajamas under the trousers. Delicious.

11. Wahhhh!!!
Sorry, but I get tired of the East Coast having "headline" weather that isn't worth speaking of. NYC has overnight low of 1 degree and it's half the national newscasts... I've gone camping in minus 20 lows and highs below zero.

DC gets a quarter inch of snow and they shut schools down - Where I grew up, they started thinking about it if we got 12 inches overnight.

22. But it is worth speaking of, Thor
This 'headline' weather is not the norm. New Yorkers aren't complaining, they are talking about it.

It is dangerous and annoying no matter who you are because in NYC people do not drive like the rest of the country. They walk everywhere, with children and packages in hand - to school, work, grocery store, doctor visits and so forth, and right now it's during flesh-freezing icy sidewalks weather. The trains are having problems operating because the icy doors won't close, and some of the ferries that shuttle people from island to island/mainland have suspended service due to ice and icy conditions.

It's created a commuting nightmare.

14. I am here, as well, and can hear the wind as I write this
It says minus 10 in the corner of my computer screen. I don't even want to think what the temp is, counting the wind chill factor. I am just grateful that I was able to bring my kitty inside and she is warm and safe. I have been sleeping with my two dogs, but it's definitely going to be a Three Dog Night.

19. Tonight in NYC, is just like all winter in Conn. last year
So, I'm pretty set with my "cold head' for this type of weather here. Though the last two night's, I've broken down and taken a cab back home from work to Queens (I get off around 10pm.) Well, I'm safe inside now and I hope all ya stay warm tonight, and tommorrow, which is supposed to be worse.

is getting worse. I'm glad that you're safe and warm inside. I think I am going to get under a blanket and try to ignore the wind.

It was like the twilight zone trying to start the car this morning. Everything started going haywire.

27. Thanks for this. Very interesting. They say it is going to break soon,
be in the single digits, rather than below zero, for the weekend. That's not counting the wind chill, of course. It says ten below in the corner of my computer screen, at the moment. I subscribe to the local weather. This doesn't sound like much of an improvement to me.
