Meteorologists deserve 1/20th of their current pay.
All that talk of severe thunderstorms today; an hour ago the forecast was changed to 'mostly cloudy' with all the rain scheduled for tomorrow.

I'd love a job where I could wear a suit, lie every day, get well paid, and have no consequences from it. Meteorology, here I come!

1. You should be President.
Then you'd get to wear a suit, lie every day, get well paid, and have no consequences.

2. I used to watch the anti-meteorologist
Some weatherman in Atlanta who was consistently wrong 95% of the time. If he said it would be sunny and fair, I took an unbrella. He seldom disappointed me.

3. In all fairness to the weather dudes,
their job is harder today than it's ever been before.

Look at all the messed up weather patterns we have
all around the world, now.

They have predicted drought for SoCal, and that we have!
In fact the entire area is one huge tinder box.

I've always been interested in weather and Meteorology,
but I wouldn't want that job now.

Our weather is way too messed up!

No global warming, huh?

:sarcasm:

4. Yes it is, the models changes quickly
Of course I am not sure which source and how long ago you heard about storms today. My interpretation of the models (NAM and GFSx) have shown that Monday was the storm day consistently the past few days. Convective season can be difficult to forecast as many features/shortwaves do not come clear until 24-48hrs out.

6. But do the people who stand in front of a camera do it?
My local PBS station (ch. 17) has radar weather over the weekend. That has all the current conditions and 22-12-36 hr forecasts as well. The mannequins who stand in front of a camera get their info from the natl. weather service.

I maintain, it's a well paid job where they can lie and get away with it. :D

9. Some do, some don't
You can have weathercasters who are just pretty faces (e.g. Pat Evans KARE 11), but also those who have been at it for years (Paul Douglas WCCO, Dave Dahl KSTP, and Belinda Jensen KARE).

my dad was a meteorologist, and a damn good one.....it was a very stressful job....you try alternating EVERY shift weekly, or try tracking a tornado and setting off alarms that terrify entire towns...and I never once saw him wear a suit to work

14. Our meteorologist are 97% right around here.
Sure, sure say what you want about predicting rain in Seattle is pretty much a slam dunk. It's the winds that make their business tricky. Very important for the shipping industry. Very important to homes and businesses along Western Washington's many rivers.

Wind patterns = Tricky business.

In a land where the weather does not vary by much, they sure seem to have an exceedingly high error rate.

20. Just like seasonal hurricane forecasting
The 2006 season will be unprecedented in the strength and frequency of major hurricanes -- OOPS
Let us try again, the 2007 season will be unprecedented in the strength and frequency of major ...
If they just stay on the same forecast long enough, they will get it right.

22. I don't like the change to "panic" forecasts over the last 10-15 years
it seems that everything more than a few snow flurries or a drizzle of rain is labeled something akin to Armageddon - "Death Storm 2007" or "Storm of the Century"

Heck, with the late snow this year, I even remember when we got some flurries, a local weather forecaster exclaiming - in fearful terms - that the snow could obscure the passing lanes on the highway and that we shouldn't panic if we couldn't see the lanes on the highway, but that we should be extra careful.

I don't even remember the term "Nor'easter" until recent years, either. And, I've lived in the Northeast my whole life.

23. Exactly. The industry has changed a lot over the years.
And these days it's all "style" and "drama". It's all a show.

I know it used to be different, but I am not talking about the past.
