Woman To Face Trial For Hoarding 196 Cats
<snip>

The original animal cruelty charges against Barletta stem from the May 2001 discovery of 196 cats in a two-story Petaluma house she bought solely for the feral felines. Barletta, a retired real estate agent, drove daily from her San Francisco home to feed the animals, but the home soon fell into disrepair.

Barletta denied mistreating the animals. She said she had rescued them and was trying to find them homes.

Barletta posted $50,000 bail for the 2001 arrest and was later found to be keeping a large number of cats in an office in Sausalito.

2. LOL!
Thanks for the early morning laugh. There's got to be a disorder named for this kind of behavior. I worked with a cat lady once. She was a pretty awful person to work with--always whining in a loud, annoying voice as to make sure everyone in the vicinity could hear her complaints. Then she was kicked out of her house for hoarding cats. I felt bad for her, but she really was one of the most maliciously evil, detestable human beings I've ever come in contact with.

3. Cat Hoarders
Cat hoarders do not have the needs of the animal in the forefront.

They often maltreat, undernourish and keep them in deplorable conditions.

It's a psychological disorder.

Cat lovers sometimes have multiple cats, but they are always well cared for.

4. Thanks.
Thanks for explaining that there is a difference between cat lovers and cat hoarders. I was hoping the cat lovers wouldn't be offended by my post--this woman was truly a horror and I meant no offense to cat owners in general.

The cat lovers I know pamper their pets, but this lady had a filthy house and the cats were indeed malnourished and sickly. No one who cares about animals would allow hundreds of stray cats to wallow in such filth.

5. Do cat lovers sometimes turn into cat hoarders?
Our house policy is "there's always room for one more" which is why we have six cats. They're all sleek and happy, but they're also expensive to keep properly (we figure about $3000 a year) and a lot of work (pill schedules, litter cleaning, bowl washing). I could see how someone with a lot of well-cared-for cats could slip into the role of a crazy cat hoarder. Maybe a job loss, a bit of depression, a pregnant cat on the doorstep, it becomes overwhelming to keep up...I can definitely understand how this could happen.
