Help me pick a class
There aren't many classes offered here for just pleasure. The local arts council is offering a few this winter. I'm trying to pick between a creative writing class and a beginning pottery class. I've done almost nothing but technical type writing so I thought it might be interesting to learn to write in another way just for my own enjoyment. As far as the pottery, I'm not an artsy person or talented with my hands but thought it would be interesting to see and feel how pottery is created.

So, if you've taken either type of class, would you give me your input? Even if you haven't, which class would you take?

1. I would go with Pottery
It's tactile in a too-virtual world. I love West Virginia.

4. Yes
that's a good point. I like thinking about shaping the clay and using the wheel. Given that this town only has a population of 8,000 and the county only has 22,000, we are very lucky to have this new arts council. They bought the old Catholic Church and did a good job of restoring it, it's a nice old stone church. They have some art shows and the classes and it's a great asset for the community.

The writing. You would be surprised how much it can help!

3. I would try the pottery class.
You don't have to be artsy. Using the potter's wheel is very soothing and relaxing. You might even surprise yourself with a beautiful piece of pottery. I took it as an elective and enjoyed it very much. My niece who majored in business also tried her hand and turned out the most gorgeous vases and bowls.

The history of pottery, famous potters and the various type of clay and glazes was interesting. Let us know what you decided. Good luck.

:hi:

5. Hmmm....
I'm wondering if I can afford both now. They would liven up this winter, the worst time to live here.

6. If it were me, I'd go pottery
Since you already know how to write - though it's technical, it's still writing - I would think that, if you only had one more class left in your life you could take, that pottery would be the way to go.

Plus since pottery is messy and etc., it's something that you aren't going to be able to teach yourself at home without spending a remarkable amount of money.

And I'm sure that the tactile, physical artistic expression will inform your writing in exciting ways.

9. There's somthing about playin with clay
that just makes me feel so spiffy! It's awesome to create something beautiful.

I would choose art for sure because I haven't had the time or money to take an art class in a long time.

10. Leaning toward the pottery
Thanks everyone for your input. The writing class is on a weeknight and I tend to go to the gym every weeknight because I need it after sitting in front of a computer working all day (or goofing off). The pottery class is on Saturday, a better day and I'll be more relaxed. Taking a pottery class will be very different for me and that's good. I can take the writing class later, the classes only run for 5 weeks.
