2. More than 15 years but...

...brazilian politician Fernando Gabeira (Pedro Cardoso's character in the movie Four Days In September), soon after he was pardoned and came back to Brazil, allowed himself to be photographed at a Rio beach with a crochet thong. That became kind of a counterculture symbol of the "new, sensitive man".

He went on to be elected to the House of Representatives. Still there after MANY reelections. He also advocates marijuana decriminalization. A truly amazing fellow.

5. Um...not a real person...

...but if you ever remember the "Todd McFarlane's Spawn" animated series, there was a gangster named Tony Twist. In one scene of this uncensored series, he jumped out of bed in a hurry. It seems that one of his associates had just shot up the two hookers he had in bed with him. (A grim and bloody series - beware.) He was wearing a black thong. Tony Twist weighed about 350 lb. Truly frightening.

(And as a bit of karma for that, Todd McFarlane was sued by the REAL Tony Twist, a hockey player, for naming a murderous gangster after him. And won a huge settlement, which McFarlane is trying to whittle down.)
