Car Insurance, crazy high...
Why does car insurance have to be so high...

This is so frustrating. I am 30 years old, have no traffic violations, and just because I want to drive a nice car, I get shafted on insurance prices.

Why?

1. it's legalized extortion
you know what else they do? they charge you more if you've got bad credit. How the hell that relates to auto insurance I'll never be able to figure out. I know this is going to sound paranoid but sometimes I think that if you fuck up one thing financially you'll never get ahead because the system screws you when you're down.

16. sorry, I didn't mean to imply that you did. I was just stating it as another outrage
I do have bad credit and I was very upset when the insurance agent told me that I had to pay more as a result. I didn't see how that would make me at a higher risk for an accident.

32. OH. Well an '07 Corvette. That's different.
Buy that kind of car, and you need to factor in a high insurance cost. Just goes with the territory.

36. That's actually not that bad.
$4k a year for a $50k (or $70k if you got the Z06) 2 seater, especially as a single male, 30 years old.

Having owned Vettes in the past, you'll soon realize just how worth it it is.

I saw one on the interstate the other day. If I had Porsche 911 money, I'd go for the Z06. An 11 second quarter mile car for that money...crazy.

39. Seriously,
I think it is a bit overstyled and overpowered.

I think the regular C6 with 400hp, the Performance Package, and a 6 speed is enough for me.

And it gets 30mpg on the highway. Cant beat that.

4. Nice cars are more likely to cost the insurance company money.
Nice car more likely to get ripped off.
Nice car more likely to cost more to fix or replace.

7. Beyond what states require you to have (such as liability), the car itself is one pricing factor.
Edited on Mon May-21-07 02:14 PM by Gormy Cuss
Seriously, a significant part of the cost of insurance is based on the car itself for the reasons that I stated. Other significant factors are age and driving history of the principal driver(s), average miles driven per year, and size of the deductible.

8. deductible is $1000, his driving record came up when i got my new car
and i was shocked to find out both his speeding tickets didn't show up--WTF is with that? I asked my agent why and he said he didn't know, it's been over a year for both but really i don't know why they aren't on his record. We have probably more insurance then we need but i figure better to have a little too much than not enough. Also the insurance companies here now have to base your rates on your driving records and not where you live--your car insurance anyhow.

14. Shh.. someone got lucky.
The zipcode pricing is too easily proved to be discriminatory because lower income areas are more likely to be higher crime areas even when the crimes weren't perpetuated against residents. Since many lower income areas also have high percentages of people of color it's pretty hard to prove that it isn't discriminatory. Regardless, it's a crude tool and I'm glad that some states have dropped it.

Cars that are known to be favorites for thieves (like sports cars) are charged at a higher comprehensive rate, IIRC. The collision part of the policy is based on the value of the car, which is why people with older cars sometimes waive it all together because the payoff value is based on the current market value of the car and even the lowest collision premium cost may not make sense.

9. yeah, that may have something to do with it
I live in Minneapolis, even though it is a nice neighborhood.

The car is an 07 corvette. I checked progressive and was given a rate of $2091.50 every 6 months. with a $1000 deductible for both comp and collision, liability limits of 100/300 thousand.

I did get a much better rate from a local agent.

10. check out American National Property and Casualty
I have them...and I have two cars insured....one old and one new...and I pay a hell of a lot less than that...

Are you sure the $2091 isn't a yearly rate? cuz if it isn't...that is a crime.

26. according to the Progressive person I talked to
on the phone, part of the reason is the traffic density and subsequent rise in the likelihood of an accident, coupled with the type of car and cost of repair.

Not my driving record or credit, lol.

My car is also high-end and costly to repair, but it's not that dense traffic-wise here.

I was always told that Males are Higher Risk until they get Older or Married.
With a sports car they are likely to put you in the High Risk Pool.
