LOST- I think it was Michael's funeral
Here is the mammoth Lost thread from yesterday.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=105&topic_id=6539067&mesg_id=6539067

My wife and I rewatched it last night. From the newspaper clipping screenshot it appears that there is a J____ mentioned (Michael Dawson was the character's name) and everyone is taking that as gospel but I don't know that that was a name. We DO know that the man was found in a loft and who reside/work in lofts? Artists (especially in TV land) which Michael was. Also the funeral appeared to be in a "black" neighborhood AND the disdain that Kate had for the funeral was clear.

SO this could very well be Michael's funeral. They could have really hard feelings over how he trapped them so HE and his son could get off the island. That being said - we don't know who the people on the boat are (sent via Michael?) and we don't know HOW they got off the island.

There appears to be some reason Jack is so tormented about leaving the island. What happened between last night and when they get off the island-Could there be some make or break moment when Jack has to decide to save himself or maybe "get ALL of them off the island" as he stated in the finale???

1. Michael was also from New York, I think.

But where was Walt? And Michael was a construction worker and an artist, I think it's safe to assume he had friends off the island who would attend his wake.

2. As I said in the other posts, I don't think everyone would hate Michael.
In particular, I don't think Jack or Sawyer would hold Michael's desire to get his son off the island against him.

Also, the black neighborhood could also just be a poor neighborhood.

I'm starting to go with the idea that the dead guy was a character we have yet to meet. Perhaps he was on the boat that is about to rescue the group back on the island.

5. That is a very real possibility
Getting off the island could be harder than dealing with Ben's group ON the island. We'll see.

3. Michael was my original guess. But the name on the article really appears to
be J_ _antham. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Michael definitely makes the most sense to me, based on everything we know. However who know what will happen between that sat phone call and the flash forward.

Really great stuff. Lost has totally redeemed itself in my eyes after a long stretch of disappointment.

4. The clipping is crinckled
is that a word?

I saw the __atham part but I don't think that is in relation to the J

Anyway it wouldn't surprise me if that has more to do with location than a name. The headline says "Man found dead downtown" (or something like that) no mention of a crash survivor or the island or anything.

7. Honestly, it could've been just about anyone.
Whomever it was could've been using an assumed name or it could be someone we haven't met yet. It's way to vague to even really speculate, unfortunately, because speculation is what's so fun about following this shoe.

I'll kick you a better question:

Walt - apparition or real-life Walt on the Island?

13. do you think they'll eventually find they are stuck in a time warp?
Perhaps the Jack/funeral story was 3 years from 2004?

17. In "the answers" the producers said they were somewhere in space - in a time continium.

11. You and me both.
It's one of the biggest, most completely unexplained things on the Island. I mean, we've got NO explanation at all for Smokey. What it is, why it's there, what it can actually do, etc.

14. "The Answers" show with the producers
I don't know if you caught that but the main purpose of it seemed to be to dimished BIG QUESTION drama. Basically they said that there is no one big question (they are right if you think about it) other than the general "What is going on?".

The question of how the plane crashed was passed over by them as already being explained....was it?.............

Yes it was. When Desmond didn't hit the numbers one time down came the plane (9/22/04-the date the show came on the air). This of course doesn't answer why it was at least a 1,000 miles off course but I digress...

They also glossed over the whole "There are polar bears on this island?" issue as it is now established that the Dharma people were doing experiments on them...polar bears.. in the middle of the Pacific... :eyes:

Anyway I don't think lots of answers are forthcoming as they appear to move this into a more normal realm of a TV show and follow a normal time line or at least flashback from after the rescue.

BTW- "Lost" refers to both them being lost on the island as well as after they return. I meant to put that in the original post.

I am going to get lunch now.

8. But why would there be no one at his funeral?
The Losties might hold a grudge against him, but surely Michael had other family/friends who would have attended.

I agree with someone on another post who thinks the body in the casket is of a person whom we viewers have not yet met. Don't forget how this show screws with time.

Sigh. It's gonna be a long wait till next season!

15. That was my thought too. Plus the name on the clipping doesn't match at all.
The producers know that there are a bazillion people who go and freeze frames and blow them up, etc. I don't think that they would be that sloppy.

I think it's Ben but he had gone by an alias.

12. Maybe it was Smokey.....
Now there's someone who would have no one show up at his/her funeral!

16. I think it's someone who had an alias - maybe Sawyer. He was acting like a dick.
He probably did some totally jerky thing before they got rescued.
