Northridge Earthquake, January 17, 1994 (pics-60kb)

It woke me up. I flipped on the light and lay in bed in terror. I watched the four corners of my bedroom twist and turn as if the room were an empty, flimsy box in a child's hand. The aftershocks were the stuff of nightmares in which you scream but make no sound.

I jumped out of bed and ran into the hallway. It felt like I was riding a bucking bronco, standing up. Afterward my wife and I went to the house next door where an elderly lady lives alone. It took her five minutes to open the door, she was so hysterical. She came and stayed with us all day that day--I don't know if I've ever felt like I helped anyone more.

Unforgettable.

It was unforgettable. It was probably the most terrifying single day in many people's lives, including mine. My poor therapist almost fired me in the months after that quake. ;)
