A camera crew is around a watering hole in Africa. There are six lions on one side, about six or seven water buffalo (with one baby) on the other. Eventually they meet. The lions scatter the buffalo and hunt down the baby, throwing it into the water.

They try pulling the baby back onto land, but just when they're about to, two crocodiles pop up and try to drag the baby back. A tug-of-war ensues and the lions eventually win out, with all six of them tugging against the two giant crocs.

Just when you think the story is over and the lions have their feast, the buffalo return.

En mass.

About 100 of them show up and start to surround the lions, who are crouched over the baby buffalo. They inch closer, cutting off the lions route to escape by placing the lions between themselves and the croc infested water.

What happens next has to be seen to be believed.

Never seen anything quite like that.

The final act was like the Cavalry coming over the hill in an old western or something.

if the baby went through all the trauma you described and surived initially the chances of it actually surviving long-term are about zero.

14. he may have walked away
but just the bacteria in his wounds after getting tugged and pulled by 2 crocs and 6 lions or whatever...with that kind of infection to fight I'd guess you can probably stick a fork in him...knowing that, I'll pass.

16. well
I can't really tell how young the buffalo was. it may have been an teenager, but if was definately smaller than the others.

But the video is worth seeing alone for the scene where the other buffalo come in to save him/her.

That was something right out of 300.

THIS....IS....BUFFALO!!!

18. And mad as hell, not gonna take it anymore!
Havocdad (wildlife management) was watching something recently and it also showed the buffalo turning on the lions and kicking the crap outta them. Said once the herds got back to a respectable size they could take those kinds of risks again. They are tough and they learn ;)

10. Spoilers in inviso-text for the faint of heart
It looks bad for a while, but the calf eventually gets away and the lions get their asses kicked.

i love the fact that the water buffalo come BACK, but with a bigger posse this time. I laughed out loud when that big, dark mass of them showed up on the screen. Nature photographers and filmmakers probably hang around for years waiting to see something like this.

If you haven't already seen it you should check out the Planet Earth series by the BBC. It's currently out on DVD.

26. This is waaay cool
thanks for posting! Animals you know, can be EVOLVING right before our eyes, and learning. First thing ya know, water buffalo are going to figure out get their young in the center of the herd and let the big bulls fight off the attacking lions with no problem.

Kinda like the lions don't have a backup plan when the buffalo don't act like buffalo. Ever see a dog who liked to chase cats until he ran into a cat who wouldn't run away from him?

This was an uplifting and inspiring video.
