How many people know what 420 means?
Just about everyone I know understands what is going on when "420" is mentioned. But in general, do you think your average person knows what it means?

6. I know it.
I don't think it's that high of a percentage of people who know what it is who are not in that subculture and even still, I think it may be (and I am not sure) a more current slang word.

I asked my friend's mom, who use to smoke the ganja, what time it was and she said 4:20 (it really was) so I said 'Good number' and it went right over her head.

7. Does anyone know DEFINITIVELY where it came from?
That's the million dollar question that always seems to have many different answers. How did 420 come to be associated with pot?

16. Yeah, I heard that one too
And that's in BigWill's link up above. I guess it's possible but I find it hard to believe that one group of high school stoner's code word spread that far. But oh well, what do I know? When you think about it, where do slang words originate? One person, and then one group, until they gradually become accepted by society at large.

I think it's what time you get home from school and thus can partake. Are there other versions?

30. Myth says it originated at San Rafael High School in the early 70's
Myth: The school is often cited as the origin of the time and codeword 420 in drug culture; originally "420" served as a code word by a group of marijuana users to meet in front of a statue at 4:20 P. M. to consume marijuana in 1971.

Fact: San Rafael borrowed the term from rival Tamalpais High School students. Tam High's clock tower clock broke in 1966 and stopped at 4:20. Dopers at Tam never recognized the clock was broken, but soon realized that every time they smoked pot, it was exactly 4:20.

but the famous landmark three-sided clock was busted most of the time I attended the school in the sixties.

I'm happy to report that proper repairs were made in the seventies and it has been a dependable clock ever since.

31. Limited research suggests otherwise...
U of S Research Suggests Marijuana Analogue Stimulates Brain Cell Growth

Oct 13, 2005

A synthetic substance similar to ones found in marijuana stimulates cell growth in regions of the brain associated with anxiety and depression, pointing the way for new treatments for these diseases, according to University of Saskatchewan medical research published today in The Journal of Clinical Investigation.

Xia Zhang, an associate professor in the U of S neuropsychiatry research unit, led the team that tested the effects of HU-210, a potent synthetic cannabinoid similar to a group of compounds found in marijuana. The synthetic version is about 100 times as powerful as THC, the compound responsible for the high experienced by recreational users.

The team found that rats treated with HU-210 on a regular basis showed neurogenesis – the growth of new brain cells in the hippocampus. This region of the brain is associated with learning and memory, as well as anxiety and depression.

The effect is the opposite of most legal and illicit drugs such as alcohol, nicotine, heroin, and cocaine.

“Most ‘drugs of abuse’ suppress neurogenesis,” Zhang says. “Only marijuana promotes neurogenesis.”

So you'd have to have a compass on your other wrist, or wait until nighttine when you could look at the north star so you could see the time. Only then your sundial wouldn't work.
