For the bird lovers out there
I was practicing my photography during a slow moment at work the other day. Got a few shots of some white pelicans hanging around the fish cleaning table. They are so funny- when they see a boat come into the ramp area, they immediately fly over the where the table is. Whey the anglers are done cleaning their fish (and the birds' are full) they leave. The gulls, on the other hand, are ALWAYS hanging aroung.

3. Cool!
I love pelicans. When they fly I can see the dinosaur in them, they are elegant and so primeval at the same time.

10. I know what you mean, I've commented to my wife about the
brown pelicans reminding me of pterodactyls.

5. I witnessed an angry blue heron today
It was trying to grab fish in the shallows but the spawning carp made so much noise in the lilly pads that it scared most of the small fish away. It was the first time I have seen a heron scream in frustration.

And when the screaming did not work, it started attacking from the air carp that jumped onto the surface -- all to no avail. The herons in Minnesota are going to bed hungry tonight.

8. Funny story from this week about laughing gulls.
I was in St. Pete with my folks at an American Legion that is on the water, and I saw one of them with his wings spread on top of the little bar roof just screaming like crazy. I told my mom he must have been doing a mating dance, then I saw the other bird, and said, not a mating dance, actual mating.

Loud little bugger. Then, I was wondering where they lay eggs, because you never really see seagull nests.

13. Around here they laytheir eggs on many of the spoil islands
when they were dredging the Intracoastal Waterway, they dumped the mud off to the side, creating a bunch of little islands. Some are very big bird nesting colonies. We have some relative rare birds, like tri-colored herons and black skimmers, that nest around here too.

White pelicans normally migrate north in spring but we have some that stay year-round.

14. The sound these gulls make is more of a demonic laugh
or cackle even.

15. Yeah they do have that funny "laugh"
We used to have mostly herring gulls up here in the mid-atlantic region, but the last 10-15 years the laughing gull seems to be much more common than the herring gulls. I actually think they are kind of cute, for a gull.:)
Love the pelicans too- we have brown pelicans I love to watch fish when I go to the beach...
