I'm watching "Jesus Camp" and it's alternately making me physically ill
and making me cry. I'm taking a break and comforting myself with ice cream.

Going back now. Fuck it's horrible.

10. I've been saved about three times in my life already.
I've accepted JC as my Lord and Savior but he has never been interested. I've searched for as long as I can remember for "the" answer and it took the shrub to make me realize that the answer isn't with "God". It's with us, the people. We have to save ourselves from the fanatics and the fools. :D

:scared:

I've read enough about dominionists, and about this movie, to be totally scared of the Christo-Fascists that exist in the communities of our country.

In fact I'm afraid that I might be waiting to hear from one  (on edit: maybe they aren't a Christo Fascist, and it was no big deal :D)

11. It's the sweet little kids' faces
looking so rapt, trying to absorb what they're being taught... that's what makes it terrible to watch.

18. True. I'd never heard of him before.
However, his telling Becky what'shername about what God wants, and about God's special place for those who mess with kids... it underscored how even he uses his God as a frame of reference and a means by which to define others' Gods and their behavior. That really struck me. Where does one draw the line? Clearly, the line MUST be drawn between Church and State and frankly I don't give a fuck if the founding fathers didn't believe that (though I think they did.) Religious dogmatism is the enemy of democracy.

24. Yeah, it is really disturbing how the kids are treated in that movie
There's a scene about halfway through where the kids are telling themselves ghost stories by flashlight in their bunkhouse. Just being kids, that's all. Then of course the camp director guy has to come in and tell them they will all go to Hell because they are behaving so badly, because telling ghost stories and having fun is sinful.

25. Yeah.
It also bothered me how they'd get the kids all worked up about their "sins" and make them cry and feel guilty. The little blonde boy who had such trouble believing... he was always so serious or actually crying. I wanted to scoop him up and save him from all the bullshit.

31. He was the one who got to me, too.
Maybe it is because he looks so much like my son at that age. My son was a serious kid, too.

That Becky woman is a classic bully.

My husband was bothered by the movie. He said it was almost too much to watch it.

38. I almost did, about a third of the way into it. Then my daughter
decided she wanted to watch with me, so we finished it together. I'm glad we did, but much of the point was made during the first few minutes of the film.
