Aside from that, I'll go with the "I'd prefer an honest bastard to a sloganeering git anyday" as per above.

You know, someone had the temerity to tell me that I didn't really want to know the truth (they found out I was a scientist-in-training) and then told me that they believe stuff because, basically, it is entertaining to do so. Not at all hypocrisy there, Captain Integrity (that's my codename for them) (This was on another website)

And then after all that, Captain Integrity had the temerity to try and lecture me on what duties I have as someone who knows physics and chemistry - basically to bastardise them to fit what they wanted.

Well, I'm not one to take that stuff lying down, so I shot them down. Arsehole.

friend, spouse, lover, etc. Defending that person could be virtuous in your eyes and not in mine. hmmm.... deep thoughts.

I have a child who many perceive as an "asshole". Because of his perceived assholishness, he has been accused of doing things that he flat out did not do. I love him with all of my heart and will protect and defend him as long as I walk this Earth.

By your definition of virtue, it defines my actions as non-virtuous. But... you can SAY that all day long and know what? You're wrong and would never convince me otherwise.

in all cases i think you have a duty to defend your children.

I mean - I still think it's always virtuous to defend all people you love/care about...

i would not hesitate to tell a friend they are being an ass, if i perceived it so. if they continue being an ass, i shouldnt protect them.

themselves is not always immune form protection just because of their label of an "asshole" by others. Right?

with the exception of child abuse, child murder, infanticide, robbing/harming an elderly person, or molestation or anything i consider beyond the pale.

i routinely have gone to bat in situations for one long-term friend who has a bit of a temper problem, and he is an asshole.

but so am i, and he stuck up for me MANY times when i was a horrifying drunk. many, many times.

should you stick up for him or should you make him stop?

and i normally don't have friends that beat children.

i think we'd all agree Bush is an asshole but things get muddled when the situation is personal, and we care for the people involved.

asshole is in the eyes of the beholder- perception and judgment.

and sadly, as is often the case, the enemy of my enemy is my friend.
