5. Thursday lies, evasions and factual inexactitudes.
"1. Do you believe in Kant's categorical imperative:
'Act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law'"
WHAT should become universal law. I'm not sure that quote even makes sense grammatically. I'd like to see Kant diagram that sentence.

"2. What is the last song you heard on your Ipod?"
Not sure. The most recent audiobook was The God Delusion.

"3. What did you have for breakfast?"
Organic cornflakes. Very crunchy.

"4. How many languages do you speak?"
Let's see now--including English--ummm, hmmmm--one. (Public education.)

"5. Do you like bagels? What kind?"
Any kind without raisins.

27. I think it means...
...Only do things that you would have become universal law; don't do anything that isn't worthy of becoming the standard.

That's really the best I can do. I'd like to see Kant diagram the sentence as well.

10. Answers
1. Do you believe in Kant's categorical imperative:

"Act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law"

Immanual Kant was a real pissant
Who was very rarely stable

Heidegger, Heidegger was a boozy beggar
Who could think you under the table

David Hume could out consume
Schopenhauer and Hegel

And Wittgenstein was a beery swine
Who was just as schloshed as Schlegel

There's nothing Nietzche couldn't teach ya
'Bout the raising of the wrist
Socrates, himself, was permanently pissed

John Stuart Mill, of his own free will
On half a pint of shandy was particularly ill

Plato they say, could stick it away
Half a crate of whiskey every day

Aristotle, Aristotle was a bugger for the bottle
Hobbes was fond of his dram

And Rene' Descartes was a drunken fart
"I drink, therefore I am"

Yes, Socrates, himself, is particularly missed
A lovely little thinker
But a bugger when he's pissed

2. What is the last song you heard on your Ipod?

I have no Ipod.

3. What did you have for breakfast?

half a bagel

4. How many languages do you speak?

just one

5. Do you like bagels? What kind?

love 'em, my favorite right now is onion but that can change

1. Do you believe in Kant's categorical imperative: "Act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law"

I am hearing it for the first time and can barely even understand it, but the answer is no. I believe more along the lines of "Act as if today were your last day on Earth and deny yourself nothing, universal law be damned."

2. What is the last song you heard on your Ipod?

I don't own an Ipod. The last song I heard on my CD player was by an obscure 1980's rock band from Cleveland called Shok Paris.

3. What did you have for breakfast?

Protein shake. Vanilla. It sucked. A lot.

4. How many languages do you speak?

Two fluently, one conversationally. I'm studying another as we speak, but I really suck at it.

5. Do you like bagels? What kind?

Yes, but only if toasted. Sesame and onion are my favorites.

5. Do you like bagels? What kind?

1. Yes

2. I don't have an iPod

3. Waffles and ham

4. Seventeen. Only two of them (English and German) are usable on Earth and/or outside my mind, though, and one of them (Hebrew) is for translation only, not conversation.

5. Yes - all of them, except those abominable "flavored" ones, like "cinnamon bun bagels" and so on. I love salt bagels, poppy seed, sesame seed, and pumpernickel bagels. One of my biggest disappointments in not being in NYC any more is not having access to good, cheap bagels.

42. While I cannot speak for Kant, I was one of his professors, so will explain it thus:
Edited on Thu Jun-14-07 01:34 PM by Rabrrrrrr
I think what he's saying that each of our actions should be of such good ethical and moral quality that we would be willing to consider them as universal rules; as actions that we would suggest all people take. Which is to say, if you aren't doing something that you don't think ALL people should be doing, then maybe it's not a good thing to be doing.

Shrub would be a good candidate for explaining this maxim to. :7

1. Kant's imperative: No. It's good in theory but absolutely doesn't work in real life. It ignores the importance of differences of scale.

2. Last song: Joe Nichols, "Another Side Of You."

3. Breakfast: A Banana, and assorted stuff from the deli Salad Bar.

4. Languages: I only speak one, English. I've failed to learn more than isolated phrases in Spanish, Hebrew, and American Sign Language.

5. Bagels: Love them, as long as they are good, large, NY bagels. I almost always get either Cinnamon Raisin or Sesame, depending on what I'm going to put on it.

34. In a nut shell
Some things are good sometimes, but only things that are always good are truly moral.

A moral rule is only valid if it still stands when raised to a universal rule. i.e., "Always tell the truth" is a valid moral rule because it would still be good if everyone always told the truth. "Give me a dollar" is not a valid moral rule, because in some cases it would be good for people to give me a dollar but in other cases it would not be.

The problem with this, is that there is no action that is always good all the time. Life gets complicated. And some things are very good on a small scale but not so good on a large scale. They does not demean those good things.

:)

45. Here are my answers.
1. Do you believe in Kant's categorical imperative: "Act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law"
Ah, no, 'cause if I did I'd be sitting in a corner with a thumb up my ass afraid to do anything should it become a universal law.

No iPod, no song.

1. Do you believe in Kant's categorical imperative:

"Act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law"

That question is too complicated for my prehistoric caveman brain to comprehend. Therefore, my answer is, "I LIKE HORSIES"

"Burnin' Streets" by Joe Strummer & the Mescaleros

3. What did you have for breakfast?
Two bowls of some nuts-n-twigs cereal

4. How many languages do you speak?
Only two. Both very poorly.

5. Do you like bagels? What kind?
Yes, just about any bagel is good with me, but I really like pumpernickel

48. 1. I rather agree with Constant's assertation
that if truth is universal, per Kant, then it is imperative that one guide a murderer to his/her intended victim if asked. I also agree with Kierkegaard in that lawlessness is a result of the autonomy inherent in the categorical imperative.

2. I ain't gotta iPod.

3. Don't eat breakfast.

4. 1.1.
