5. I like Tre!
Very competent...I'm not so hot on Hung, but he'll be quite a competitor.

4. Tres good!
HATE Hung.

Micah is compentenet... and cute! None of the women were annoying last night... I'm sure that will change.

Where was Ted???

Clay deserved to go -- working for, basically, Aramark left him way out of his league here. Most of the Cheftestants this year are experienced chefs and cooks.

This so may redeem the trainwreck that was S2. Although, nothing will redeem Ilan winning. I can probably cook better than he can -- I at least know how to cook duck and render fat. All he can do is plagiarize someone else.

6. Hung...
He's way more talented than Marcel, I think. I hate him though, regardless.

Yep, BuhBye Clay...

I'm assuming that Ted will be there next week, this was just a special Bourdain thing, which was a lovely surprise.

And yes, nothing will make up for TedIlan winning....ugh. I do hope that a woman can win this season, that would make me happy. :)

12. At least Hung admits he's a CPA.
:)

I like him a lot. His arrogance is based upon the food, but he also respects others enough to get their opinion about his food.

Plus he doesn't have a gimmick, such as wine or foam.

You are correct about Ilan, though. Sam was clearly robbed that season. The final should have been Sam v. Elia.

7. Bah! I missed Lil Bush because of it, dammit!
But I thought it was pretty good. It's set down here in South Florida, and I was kinda skeptical when they had a chef from Tantra on — when I think Tantra, I don't think food. I think hookahs and shots at 4 a.m.

As for the other Miami guy, I've never heard of "The Food Gang"

Felt sorry for the poor Southern dude. He was so damn nervous, it's no wonder his food sucked. I wish he'd gotten a second chance.

9. I liked it.
I'm glad I gave this show a second chance. I was really set on not watching it after last season and Ilian winning. I had a problem watching them work with the exotic proteins, though :puke: I don't really have a favorite, yet. Their digs this year are fabulous. I hope the contestants from last year are seething with jealousy.

10. Alas, poor Cheferline... you were just in way over your head for this competition!
I felt so bad for the guy when he was talking about his dad's suicide as the result of the pressure in the restaurant business, but I knew he was a goner early on when they showed several sympathetic confessionals on his part.

That Joey sure seems like a major-league control-freak asshole! Ranting about the one woman (Micah or Lea?) who was trying to comfort Clay, and said something like, "If she tries to tell me what do, I'll tell her where to shove it!" Yeah, just see how that works out for ya, tough guy! Looks like he gets into it with Howie, who doesn't look like he'll be okay with getting pushed around...

Tre and Hung will obviously go far into the competition - very impressive dishes from both. If Hung has enough brains to not get caught up in gimmickry that will ultimately detract from his talent (*cough*foam*cough), he has the potential to really blow away the judges on occasion. Tre was SO much more likeable, however, and I saw last night as a possible foreshadowing of the final 2, but I'm sure we'll see a lot more from at least a few others prior to that point.

13. Yep, Joey's an ass
(I finally got to watch it last night)

From the previews for next week, it looks like he's going to have a tough time next week. Don't suppose it would help to say "stay calm". What a jerk.

I'm going to need more than one episode to pick a favorite, but so far, I do like Tre.

11. It was fun.
Presumably straight after judging their betters (and Season 2), the cheftestants were treated to a buffet of appetizers including oysters, shrimp, beef, and fruit. Shortly after, Padma and Tom saunter in and reveal the quickfire challenge. Create an amuse bouche in ten minutes from raw seafood and meat that have been sitting in the Miami heat for thirty minutes. :9 Micah wins with a dish that actually looks very tasty.

The elimination challenge involves creating a surf-and-turf dish with a variety of unpalatable meats, such as kangaroo, black chicken, geoduck, snake, and alligator. Ultimately, two of the cheftestants fail to deliver parts of their dishes to Padma, Tom, Gail, and Anthony Bourdain at the amuse biatch table. But, they send Clay the mini-Dave home because his food was worse than having no food at all.

Overall, I thought the chefs as a group were better than S2. My impression was that all of them could cook, but that some adjusted to the show better than others. This is a strong contrast to S2, which was 55% drama (and 45% saffron foam).

15. I don't know what it is with Bravo--they can fill a show with repugnant
assholes, and I just can't take my eyes off of it....

I watched the finale from season two and then the opener for season three the other night, and so far it looks like we'll be seeing a lot of Hung and Tre (Tre is seemingly the most likeable at this point.) I can't really tell which of the women will really rise up--they seem like a more even batch than the male contestants.

Do you think they will take Marcel's advice to use gargantuan amounts of Saffron?

20. I'm encouraged. I think it will be a great season
I loved seeing all the strange proteins :) Some of them I've had before, and the rest I'd love to try, with the exception of the black chicken :wtf:

I liked Trey and didn't hate Hung as much as I expected to. At the judges table they seemed to (at least for now) respect each other and each other's talent, which is a nice change of pace from the overinflated egos of last year's finalists.

Other than those two and Clay (who, like Ken from Season 1, was so obviously going home as the show progressed, based on the way the show was edited), it didn't seem like we got much insight into anybody else. I kind of liked Howie, and I'm intrigued by Sandee--I don't remember what proteins she had last night, but I thought the challenge would have been a good one for a southern-food specialist like herself.

It looks like it's going to be a good season, though. I'm excited for next week. :bounce:
