Name A Song Where The Re-Make Was A Vast Improvement on The Original
My vote goes to Gary Jules' re-make of the Tears for Fears song "Mad World". Gary stripped out that 80s snytho-pop sound and made it into a hauntingly beautiful song that makes you almost cry when you hear it. He did such a great job on the song that the original should be obliterated from our memory.

which is where the current arrangement of "Hallelujah" originated.
Unlike dear Rufus, Cale doesn't have a problem controlling his pitch

6. Jefferson Airplane's "Wooden Ships", Bryan Ferry's "Sympathy for the Devil"
As much as I like CSNY and the Stones, these classics were actually improved upon by being taken in totally different directions.

Don't fret, however, CSNY did a better job of "Woodstock" than it's originator, Joni Mitchell.

Maybe not a vast improvement but it's pretty damned good. He replaces the shiny happy original with a stark version, which actually makes a bit more sense considering the lyrics if you really listen to them.

Dolly puts more passion into it, making it painful and sad. Whitney is more technically impressive, and she gives it a triumphant, positive feel. Both versions demonstrate what an incredible songwriter Dolly Parton is.

Bowie's usually outstanding, but he seems kinda listless on that number. Cobain's delivery gives it a pained edge that improves on the original material.

42. I don't know about "vast", but some remakes that I like better:
"Highway 61 Revisted" (Dylan), remade by PJ Harvey, rocks.

"I'm gonna love you too" (Buddy Holly) remade by Blondie, very quirky and almost scary.

"I want you" (Dylan) remade by Sophie B. Hawkins, is really touching and sweet.

"Wuthering Heights" (Kate Bush), the version by Pat Benatar is more listenable

"Romeo and Juliet" (Dire Straits), the Indigo Girls version just about makes my hair stand on end, worth posting

Also the live version of "Unchained Melody", sung by Ann Wilson of Heart is the best version of it I have ever heard, she tears it up.

108. I was gonna post about his "Highway 61" too
I saw him do that one at a rock festival in France in 1970.
I was over there without a guitar and was going nuts, so I
bought a lightweight Hagstöm electric guitar in Sweden made
entirely out of glittering plastic just to have a fretboard
to play on. Winter saw it and went nuts, and insisted I sell
it to him.

(I did of course! what do you think!!)

You can listen to a 30-second sample of his "Brown Sugar" at the iTunes store. Search for "Earl Thomas" and listen to "Brown Sugar" on his album "Intersection." I also got to see him do it live, completely acoustically, at Balboa Park in San Diego. He took his time and it was unforgettable.
