Some real assholes at our "Stop the War" table today.
Yeeesh! I'm 61 years old. Do I need this shit?

Several draft age guys pass the table and tell us that the US should "kill em all". One guy who was in his early 40's gave us the finger. Mind you, it's me and another gray haired lady "manning" this table. I wanted to go after this little shit and throttle him but instead I said, "And you have a nice day too."

About an hour later, the finger guy came back and apologized. All's right with the world, I guess!

As to the draft age kids who want to kill...I really want to get some of those Army recruitment applications and hand them out to these little macho shits.

Please tell me there is a reason to keep doing this every week !

1. Raven, I admire what you do so much. I've been thinking of
Edited on Sat Jun-16-07 02:28 PM by sfexpat2000
doing something like that in my neighborhood but frankly, my tolerance for outright hostility is sort of low right now. Maybe I need to eat more spinach or something.

Getting some recruitment applications is a great idea, imho. Put a little reality into the faces of the thought-impaired.

To you, :toast:

/oops

2. Thanks! Actually, I think I'm just tired today. Usually people are
very polite even when they don't agree. I am wondering if, as things go farther into the toilet, the war mongers will get more aggressive. Maybe that's what I'm beginning to see. Anyway, I have a week to get energized again and I would never think of abandoning the table...just dream about it once and awhile! :-)

5. I bet! I myself have been looking around for a good freeway type
blogging spot on my daily walks with my puppy. I live near a highway used by commuters and it seems like a natural.

But my impeachement / stop the war activism has been down since March. I guess I need to refuel. And you're right -- most people are civil even when they disagree. My mom is doing more than I am right now. She's registering voters every weekend in an overlooked, mostly Latino community in San Jose, CA. She's 75 and is putting me to shame. :)

In dealing with the Cabal's criminality, the hardest thing for me hasn't been the work itself but trying to prioritize among the many fires they set -- which one to focus on. I finally settled on impeachment as the umbrella I needed.

(Maybe we should all lay in a stock of white feathers as well. lol)

6. Yes you should!!
I really think you will be surprised at the positive support you will get. We have been doing it twice a week since 2002 and we RARELY have any negative reactions anymore.

8. I know you have and have been following your posts.
Thanks so much.

I held a weekly vigil out here on the beach for about a year but had to lay off when things got too wacky at our house. It was all right but not really a visible as I would have liked, either.

9. People need to do what they feel comfortable doing.
I was really shy about this tabling when I first started and some of my colleagues just won't do it because they hate the exposure. They will stuff envelopes, make call..anything but being out in the public. I respect that because I think everyone has their moment and their particular skill.

The one interesting thing about doing this every damn saturday for the last 3 years is that you get to know your community and, as I think about it, more people say "thanks for doing this" than give me the finger.

I KNEW I'd get a breath of fresh air posting here!

10. That's so true about getting to know your neighbors.
And at bottom, may be the most powerful thing we can do.

4. They are just getting angrier and louder - the 28%
The good news is we are the majority now. And they know it.

So just keep on smiling and telling them to have a nice day. Cause they won't! :)

7. This is exactly why my close friends bar me from manning tables.
I would show no restraint and get into an unwanted physical altercation faster then I can spit. My strengths are in entering from the wings as an extra, backup, so to speak.

11. We would blow kisses
at those kinda folks from our corner at our monthly demos. I'm glad you are keeping it up. There's so little new blood around here to help, I burned out really bad and had to take time off.

And it was nice watching those folks slip into the minority and the folks honking and waving in support multiply. Take heart in those.

12. You're doing good, Raven! For all of us!
The ones who are outspoken and angry aren't the ones you are reaching, anyway. For every one of them, there is someone less aggressive who is taking heart that their gut feeling about how wrong the war is, is shared by someone like you, with the courage to be out there with your opinion.

You make people like me more confident about speaking the truth -- thank you!

13. THE reason
the thing that keeps me going to protests no matter what anyone says:
What if everyone was discouraged?
What if no one ever bothered?
Every single voice, especially the ones from the outside-standing up to something as big as our government, should be heard.. at least represented by a few people who're brave enough to show up.
I'm proud of every single person who protests war.

And all those boys did was set a perfect example, as if you needed proof :eyes:

14. Remember what Gandhi said:" First they laugh at you, then they ignore you
,then they fight with you, then you win". Looks like they are in stage three.
