2. That's pretty sad. My father and I didn't see eye to eye on a lot of things
Edited on Sat Jun-16-07 07:06 PM by irkthesmirk
but I don't think I ever thought of him as an asshole. Hope it doesn't leave any lasting scars for you.

5. That's the song I always think of when I think about my father.
He died 30 years ago, but unlike in the song, I did get a chance to tell him I loved him before he died. We had a strong love/hate relationship, but in the end, love won out.

I miss you, Dad.

in that we did get a chance to have a reunion with my father the summer before he passed and we got some good pictures to remember him by.

11. Yes, he was living by himself on the other side of the country from all of us and we all
just happened to be able to meet at the same time. We were happy that he was getting to live the life that he wanted after staying with my mother "for the sake of the children". We loved them both but they weren't meant to grow old together.

22. "Daddy's Hands"
My dad and I danced to this at my wedding. Such a great song.

With my dad in the hospital, and this being Father's Day, I am thinking of this song a lot.

10. Hi edwardsguy! Welcome to DU!
:hi: I've never heard of the first two people you posted but I like them both. Cat's in the Cradle is the classic song about fathers's and their shortcomings. Thanks for posting these!

12. Steve Goodman's "My Old Man" always makes me cry.
I won't listen to my CD of it tonight. My father died 7/16/92. I miss him so much.

But I will celebrate Father's Day tomorrow with four fathers...my brother-in-law, my nephew-in-law, my nephew who recently became a father by marriage, and my brother's brother, who is actually a great-grandfather.

15. Here's mine
Irk, nice to hear your reflections on your father. I'm sure he's smiling down on you!

This song isn't about my father - I think the "Living Years" is also more in line with my dad but I've always loved this song:

It looks like you had a wonderful relationship. I really like those two videos. That is one of my favorite songs by Willie Nelson and the second video was performed on the day I got married back in 1995. Great songs and pictures!

28. No, but he did do a few 'impossible' hotloads
The sort where you shouldn't be able to make it in time. That is usually the times I drove. That way he could get a little shut-eye.

Good times.

Leader of the Band:

Especially the line "He gave to me a gift I know I never can repay." He certainly did, and for that I will be forever grateful.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qgZftrobqlg

This song pretty well sums at my relationship with my father; he's a grumpy old man now but I remember the early days when this is how it use to be and I remember him with appreciation and thanksgiving.

37. No one does it like The Boss. From the Nebraska album, "My Father's House".
http://www.brucespringsteen.net/songs/MyFathersHouse.html

Last night I dreamed that I was a child out where the pines grow wild and tall
I was trying to make it home through the forest before the darkness falls

I heard the wind rustling through the trees and ghostly voices rose from the fields
I ran with my heart pounding down that broken path
With the devil snappin' at my heels

I broke through the trees, and there in the night
My father's house stood shining hard and bright the branches and brambles tore my clothes and scratched my arms
But I ran till I fell, shaking in his arms

I awoke and I imagined the hard things that pulled us apart
Will never again, sir, tear us from each other's hearts
I got dressed, and to that house I did ride from out on the road, I could see its windows shining in light

I walked up the steps and stood on the porch a woman I didn't recognize came and spoke to me through a chained door
I told her my story, and who I'd come for
She said "I'm sorry, son, but no one by that name lives here anymore"

My father's house shines hard and bright it stands like a beacon calling me in the night
Calling and calling, so cold and alone
Shining 'cross this dark highway where our sins lie unatoned
