Bailed Him, Fed Him, Gave Him Sex. The Sex Is When The Problems Started
But then, isn't always?

I don't often post here in DU's Lounge. But when I saw this story, somehow I knew this is where it belonged.

Man chewed off girlfriend's nose: lawyer
Crown wants indefinite sentence for creep who disfigured girlfriend

Canoe CNEWS
By SAM PAZZANO, COURTS BUREAU
June 22, 2007

A Scarborough drug dealer "committed crimes that were nothing short of stark horror" when he chewed off his girlfriend's nose and tortured her for hours, a Crown attorney said yesterday. Angel Jones is extremely likely to commit violent offences in the future, Crown attorney Paul Amenta said in Superior Court at Jones' dangerous offender hearing. Amenta implored Justice Eugene Ewaschuk to declare Jones, 30, a dangerous offender and imprison him indefinitely.

"The victim never got a chance to live out her dream of pursuing a modelling career," Amenta said. "She was and is a beautiful woman, but she was seriously disfigured by Mr. Jones and it is a reminder of what he did to her on Feb. 17, 2002." In 2004, a jury convicted Jones of aggravated assault, uttering death threats and sexual assault for his attack on the 24-year-old woman.

PAROLED THAT DAY
Jones had been paroled that day and his victim picked him up from jail, served him a meal and made love to him. He then viciously attacked her, believing she learned new sexual techniques and was therefore unfaithful to him. She was rescued by Toronto Police as she was trying to "hold her face together." Jones was described by one officer as looking "like an animal chewing on a dead carcass" when police arrived. Jones' lengthy criminal record includes 18 convictions for violence, including assaulting his sister and stepfather.

Jones, who fired his lawyer and represented himself at the trial, repeated his account in his arguments, saying he bit off her nose accidentally. Jones said he placed his mouth over her nose while he questioned her as to whether she "betrayed" him by having another lover while Jones was serving 13 months in jail. "Her nose just popped off as she pulled her head back," said Jones. The judge said he will render his decision Tuesday.

2. Well yeah....
..."In 2004, a jury convicted Jones of aggravated assault, uttering death threats and sexual assault for his attack on the 24-year-old woman.... Jones' lengthy criminal record includes 18 convictions for violence, including assaulting his sister and stepfather."

So the question I have is, why only three years later after his conviction was he even being considered for parole after all that???

4. Now wait just a minute
Just a few days ago, a woman ripping off a man's testicles (while he slept) was considered high comedy.

I would lock them both up for a very long time.

10. Not that I think she deserved it in anyway but
she picked him up from prison... that wasn't a clue to his violent behavior?

15. Clearly this is a situation that was avoidable...
...to the extent that she had an opportunity to leave while he was locked up.

But I've seen this abuser/victim dynamic at play before and in my experience they rarely do walk away on their own. Someone, or something must intervene to break the cycle, because the abuser isn't going to just walk away from what is perceived to "belong" to him.

And when you consider his record of violence and abuse and the authorities kept letting him out, I can understand how she may have felt trapped. I'd say the blame for this one rest mainly with the government.

16. What's worse....
...this numb-skull fires his attorney. And then this is the best he can come up with to tell the judge as an explanation on how it all happened, "accidentally." I know the lawyer was relieved to have been fired. I know I would have.

I'm sure the judge will want to ask him (before he sends his ass back to prison - indefinitely/permanently - I hope), does he ordinarily conduct interviews with people while holding their noses in his mouth. Its an interesting technique. They might be interested in this at Gitmo....
