We had a dog for awhile when I was a kid, but I have to confess I never loved it nearly as much as I loved our kitties.

3. Doggies!
I couldn't have them for most of my life due to allergies but now I have had dogs for 6 years and it changed my life! Cats are fun and cute and cool and all but dogs are the very embodiment of total unconditional love. They can learn things, perform tasks and tricks. They guard you and live for you. My pug is across the room right now snoring loudly and it is the best sound in the world to me.

I often nearly have accidents because I am looking at other people's dogs while I am driving. Big little, it doesn't matter the breed, if you are a dog, you are my friend. Doggies rule! :D

Black lab drives owner's car into river Fri Jun 22, 11:15 PM ET

SAGLE, Idaho - Bad dog. Charlie the black lab drove his owner's car into the Pend Oreille River. As Mark Ewing walked home Wednesday evening after returning from picking up a pizza, Charlie jumped into the car through an open window, and apparently knocked the vehicle into gear.

"He somehow got the car into neutral," Ewing said. "My car just went boom, down an incline and into the drink."

Ewing could only watch as his Chevy Impala sank into the river. No dummy, Charlie jumped out of the window as the car went downhill.

"There's nothing weirder than looking at your car cruising down your driveway when you're not in it and seeing your dog jump out and then watching your car go splash," Ewing said.

Actually, things got a little weirder when the tow truck driver showed up.

Before the driver dove into the water to hook the car up to his truck, he asked Ewing to hold his dentures.

"My car's in the drink, I've got dentures in my hand and this guy Keith ... goes swimming," Ewing noted.

As a little girl, I had both, so I could never choose one over the other. I like them both for different reasons!

Cats for their independent, quirky personalities, and dogs for their goofiness and complete and utter adoration of their humans.

15. Cats. Dogs make me nervous. Too subservient. I love 'em, but I feel
troubled by how subservient they act. Makes me feel like a slave owner. I especially dislike dogs who are trained within an inch of their lives. Sit, roll over, fetch, don't bark, don't do anything unless I order you to. Creeps me out. Not the dog's fault, obviously.

Everything else is second best.

When I go to a dog owner's house, I pet their critters and usually like them (although I don't like dogs' greasy fur feel and I don't like dog breath blown in my face :) , but when I come home I am soooooo thankful I have kitties.

Kitties are so soft and cuddly and they purr and are funny and beautiful ... :loveya:

23. I Never Understood Why People Make it a CHOICE
I like them both. I like dogs for their unconditional love, and I like cats for precisely the opposite reason: it amuses me to no end how self-centered they are. Sadly, I own neither a dog NOR a cat currently; I live in an apartment and don't have room enough for a dog*, and just can't stand dealing with a litter box.

*I could get one of those annoying little yipping dogs, but I've always maintained that if a dog can't catch a frisbee, it's useless.

26. Exactly
That's what got me thinking about the question.

Why should a person have to be either a "cat person" or a "dog person" ?

I generally avoid labels, like these, if/when I can.

These are two terms I detest. I guess because people always assume I am a "cat person".

I think of dogs as more dependent and cats as more independent in terms of their emotional needs, but having had both cats and dogs, they both need you in different ways (besides food) and neither is all that independent.

34. I like cats because they are less needy and pack-oriented than dogs.
I like their independence and ability to look after themselves...but cats will give you that unconditional love too. They just express it differently than a dog does.
I think also...(and I very easily could be wrong) that a cat's personality is less dependant upon the breed than a dog's is.

Mine are all DHS...and they do come when they are called...about 80% of the time.

36. You've never detected a single useful thing cats do?
There are many things..

My cats scare away rodents, for one. All our neighbors have field mice problems (from nearby construction) but we don't. Also, both of my cats meet me at the door when I come home. Now, I agree, that is not normal cat behavior.

I even had one cat, once, I trained to sit on my back and give me back massages! I kid you not! He was declawed...I still miss that cat!

You see, I met the cat trainer for Morris the Cat when I was only 10 years old. So, I've been "training cats," since an early age. Yes, contrary to popular belief, cats can be trained! Of course, being as independent as they are, they'll probably never be as subservient as dogs. ;-)

There are many more useful things cats do...but I don't have time to write much at the moment!

years ago.

Cats are a part of my life.
They can be a nuisance at times, but I love

Like Jay Leno once said,

" He's just ignoring you!"- LOL- you can tell
Leno has cats. ;-)

I've never had a dog, but I do like them.

when I was about 6 or 7 I remember. It was the mascot of a fraternity and I went to a school that was on the campus of the University there as it was a place that the education department of the university ran. A "laboratory school", LOL.

At any rate that dog would knock me down, tear at my coat, scared me to death.

I like both cats and dogs now, and the dogs I grew up with as pets were not anything near the size of a St. Bernard. I might say that I would not want to have one as a pet.

Cats are a little better about house training and are affectionate.

Dogs are usually loyal to almost a fault, which can make them good with kids.

But some dogs are just, well, stupid. Have one of those right now. :grr:
