Why would two men talk in a parking lot while the child of one of them waits behind the door?
The front entrance has an unlocked main door, and a locked inner door.

Two men are talking in the parking lot.

The child of one of them, a young girl, has her face pressed against the inner door's glass while they chatter about their usual nothings.

I go out to empty my trash and have to keep her from not only going out, but from hurting herself as the inner door starts to close.

What the fuck is wrong with people? We raise people to be fearful of strangers, and then we can't be bothered to keep track of our offspring.

If I'd done nothing, she could have gotten hurt at worst - or ran out to daddy, who'd probably tell the landlord I'd willfully let her out.

2. People expect other people to watch their kids
While at the same time they will go ballistic if you try to keep the kid from doing something obnoxious or dangerous.

This is known as The Law of Inverse Imbecility.

3. If our society kept consistent about what it wants, then it'd be a lot easier.
As it stands, nobody's gonna look out for anyone else - because of misunderstanding or fear of lawsuit.

Nor would anybody tell them to take interest in their children - once again, misunderstanding or other unsavory forms of response.

4. I once prevented a little kid from falling out
of a shopping cart. Mom had walked away a few steps and the kid started to climb out. I saw what was going on and rushed up to head off the fall. Think mom said as much as "Thank you"? Think again. She shot me a dirty look and took off in the opposite direction. Inverse Imbecility, indeed.
