12. I talked a friend out of Gold Lame bridesmaid dresses
the ones she wanted would have put major emphasis on our breasts. Four of us were pretty average to small in size but one girl had massive DD (natural breasts). I convinced the girl that everyone would be looking at this bridesmaid's breast and not her (the bride) at the wedding.

We had a more tasteful green dress

24. Has anyone here seen (or worn) a bridesmaid dress they would wear again?
I've played many weddings; but of all the "coordinated" outfits I've seen, there was only one that I'd have worn somewhere else. It was a pretty floral print dress with short sleeves and a full skirt. The design was very simple, and it looked nice on all the bridesmaids.

27. no, but had I had bridesmaids, I would have let them stick
to a resonable style and color and bought from anywhere BUT a bridal store.

But then, I spent $150 on my bridal gown and didn't have maids! (We splurged like hell on the honeymoon and have never regretted it!)

42. I call it bridal psychosis. And I'm amazed at how many women develop this.
It's JUST ONE DAY. Yes, it's a special day, but no one is going to care whether your dress was $200 or $20,000. No one is going to care that all your bridesmaids are perfectly coordinated in $600 get-ups (mostly, people just say "oh those poor women, look at what she made them wear!"). I cannot believe what some brides go totally ballistic over, and how much money and energy they waste on unimportant details.

My wedding cost about $4500, and even that seemed expensive to me. My sister-in-law spent way more than that on her dress. My dress was $25, and I altered it myself. I made my own cake, my own invitations, and my own flower arrangements. They weren't perfect (well, the invites and the cake were pretty spectacular if I do say so myself), but they were lovely. Everyone had a good time and we're still married 10 years later.

AND, we didn't go into debt up to our ears paying for ONE DAY.

:hi:

47. They see a picture in a magazine...
The svelte bride and groom stand between beaming bridesmaids and groomsmen with perfect figures, in front of lovely tall flower arrangements. Behind them, a flute and string quartet sits in the sun next to a sparkling blue lake.

What the photo doesn't show is the wind knocking the pretty flowers down, the jet ski racing by as they say their vows, the embarrassing way Cousin Betty's cleavage spills out of her gown, Grandma in the throes of heat stroke, and the varnish melting off the quartet's instruments as the flute player sucks in another fly. So, of course it will be a lovely sight for their August nuptials.

Oh...and of course it won't rain. ;-)

30. I wore one that was definitely worse than two or three of those. My brother's second
wife asked me and my sisters to be bridesmaids and initially was very open to suggestions ("what colors do you like/hate?" "what style would you like to wear?"). Then, it was as if a switch turned on, or maybe it was just her plan all along to pick whatever my sister and I said we'd hate the most. I know for a fact I said my least favorite color was mauve and that I really hated lots of lace. Guess what color and material the dresses were?

Yep. Mauve lace.

Oh, but it gets worse. The hem was a handkerchief style. Which I know is back in style now but it wasn't at the time (and I never liked it even when it was in style). I think it looks messy and ragged. The dress itself was in two layers. The first layer was a shiny satin slip-thing with the lacy handkerchief bottom attached. Then over it was a long-sleeve lace tunic-type thing. Well, both my sister and I are rather buxom, so in every single photograph the flash picked up the reflection of the satin slip under the lace and our boobs are practically glowing. Real attractive.

To add insult to injury, we had to wear these HUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE silk flower arrangements in our hair, and both of us had really short hair. So it looked like some tropical plants had been dropped on our heads from a great height.

The whole thing was so hideous, I think I burned every last picture I had.

We should've guessed then that my brother's second wife would turn out to be a manipulative lunatic.

45. I was in a wedding where we wore dresses similar to #8
It was 1972 and my best friend's wedding. I was 18. The dresses were pretty hideous - basically #8 except that the bodices were white with sheer gauze long sleeves and the skirts were the colored part. There were 3 of us in her wedding party, a maid of honor and us 2 bridesmaids. The plan was for the maid of honor to wear the dress in yellow, her favorite color and for the maids to wear green, which both of us liked. If you recall the lemon yellow and lime green from Trix cereal or rainbow sherbet, you'll know what the 2 colors were like. In fact as I recall the colors were called sherbet yellow, sherbet green, etc. We ordered the dresses and waited. About 2 weeks before the wedding, disaster struck - twice. First, her reception site burned down and second, the attendants' dresses came in - one in yellow, one in green and one in orange - picture orange sherbet. Naturally the orange dress was the one that was my size. Orange is not my best color - I have reddish hair and it just doesn't do wonderful things for my complexion. The store tried to tell me it was my fault, that I had ordered the orange dress. I presented the receipt - clearly stated thereon was - ta da - Green. Next the store tried to tell me that once the dress was ordered it could not be changed. That's nice, order me the right dress and I won't change it. They put the order in and put a rush on it.

The bride was on tranquilizers and my mom was on the phone to the store and the Better Business Bureau. It turned out that the store had, um, to be polite, not ordered our dresses at all. The order had been, ah, "misplaced". However another wedding in Georgia had ordered the same style and the same colors and sizes for 2 of the dresses as in our order, with the last dress, mine, in orange instead of green. The GA store sent the dresses up to the NJ store and everyone figured because of the time factor we would accept them. They failed to take into account 2 things: my mother and the bride - neither of whom cared for orange. Mom called the store every day for 2 weeks complaining and threatening to take an ad in the local paper - "Getting married, call me to find out where not to go for your dress." The bride threatened to return her wedding dress. And told me that I was in her wedding if I walked down the aisle in blue jeans and a t-shirt reading "Generic bridesmaid's dress". The day before the wedding my dress was delivered. The bride and I drove to the store for a fitting. The store people were less than polite. They threw the dress at me and told me they didn't have time to alter it. So that night my mom, who knew how to sew, tried to hemmed the dress. Because of the construction - the skirt had an over skirt and underskirt, the over skirt had to be taken up at the waist and the underskirt hemmed. There was only so much she could do and I had to walk around the next day discretely holding up the skirt with one hand so I didn't trip. If I forgot, and I did, I tripped. It was a very long day and I was happy to take the dress off and put it in the pile for Good Will.

Fast forward to 1997 and my wedding. Same best friend was my attendant. I told her to wear anything she liked and in any color. She wore a burgundy velvet dress that looked lovely. She has since apologized for the green sherbet dress.

49. What's the quote about some of those colors/cuts?
Ah, yes: "They were invented in hell just to make bridesmaids look bad."

Note to self: Whenever I eventually get hitched, reserve the right to examine/criticize the bride's choice for her attendants' clothing.
