2. Probably not
All I did was remove the thermal compound from the CPU and heatsink, after my brother had cleaned the fluff out of the heatsink and fans a few months ago. I hadn't dared use it since then, because I thought that really I should get the thermal interface properly sorted out first. So I cleaned it up and applied new thermal compound.

It doesn't seem to have caught fire yet. :D

4. one no longer reads the hard drive
one keeps forgetting the system time

one has something wrong with the mobo and wont install anything

I recently had to disassemble my Toshiba A70 to clean out the cooling system (clogged with dust to the point where the machine was hutting down from overheating). Also had to remount the CPU as you did--scary stuff, but I had a good guide and all went well. Um, except I had two screws left over when I put it back together and it wouldn't boot until I took it back down and figured out where they went. Not something to be undertaken lightly. :hi:
