British Pub Owner (this is genius) Plans to Declare Pub Foreign Embassy to Defeat Smoking Ban!

For pub-goers who enjoy a cigarette with their drink, next week's ban will make England a very different place.

So one landlord has claims to have found a loophole to fight the new law - by declaring his pub to be part of a different country.

The Wellington Arms in Southampton is set to transform itself from a public house into the official embassy for a tiny Caribbean island.

If it is successful, the pub would be classified as "foreign soil", allowing smokers a haven from the smoking laws covering the rest of the UK.

In theory it would then also be allowed to serve cheaper drinks because the pub would be exempt from VAT.

8. Well, I live in a town that went through a smoking ban a few years ago.
The results:

  • Most bars now offer a place to smoke outside.

  • Only a few went out of business.

  • Nobody cares anymore.

  • Now the smoked is forced on people walking down the street.

It didn't affect business that much.

11. You know, NYC bar owners and patrons squawked at this at first
...but now business is better than ever and patrons are happy not to smell like smoke when they leave a bar.

14. Same thing happened with Delaware
I know one bar claimed they had to close because of the smoking ban - but the drinks were so overpriced and food was so lousy that everyone knew the end was near. There's a new place in that building now that is doing quite well. I met the new owner a few times and he was telling me about financial records he found in the office from that last owner - seems the previous owner was also paying himself a hefty salary.

16. Can't wait for the ban
My younger friend has quit smoking (she started smoking at 16 and now 18 she bought her first quit smoking mints to combat it) as her mum too. My older friends (in their 50s and 70s) are pissed off with the ban and are complaining about the ban and calling it nanny-state politics.

Although this sounds like a good idea, the UK will count it as part of their country and still enforce the ban.

I'm going to keep an eye on my friends, I have a niggling feeling that they will reach for their cigarettes without realising it.

My MN hometown has banned smoking in places that serve food. Others that are just an alcohol establishment can continue the smoking.
