Anyone see a pattern or rationale in these words?
I mean.. If you read it like a poem or compare to a particular doctrine, are the words "from" somewhere? Or, just an artist's expression?

1. Sounds like a self-help program

I sort of like it put together that way.

2. I'm thinking that too
I'm curious if all the other missing numbers have words associated with them. One to Ninety-nine and only 6 or so represented...

5. One last try...
The words are gathered from the video part of "The Fray - How To Save a Life"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TmFi2snLr7o

I was hoping someone would recognize the steps from some step-program. I Think its just randomness for the sons sake though.

What say ye?

:hi:

6. I don't recognize it
Edited on Wed Jun-27-07 08:44 PM by idgiehkt
it sounds like something that has about 100 entries in it though.

The story I heard about that video is that he was working as a counselor for these troubled kids and apparently one of the kids he was working with had such a troubled past that it made him realize that he was completely inadequate to give the kid any kind of advice because he didn't have the life experience to draw from ("cause after all, you do know best") and it made him really sad but at the same time grateful for his own life. Probably the numbered entries express the feeling that he is going 'by the book' in trying to reach out and help this kid, because he feels so powerless really to do or say anything that might change the path the kid is on.

Really powerful song, and really unique topic to sing about, I think, it's a breath of fresh air. :hi:

edit:

I just found this, I have no idea what the source is unless it is that song:

1. Love 2. Listen 3. Breathe 4. Imagine 5. Let it go 6. Believe 7. Forgive 8. Hold still 9. Hold close 10. Amaze yourself 11. Remember 12. Make yourself secure 13. Make everyone secure 14. Take it back 15. Let it go 16. Dream 17. Fear 18. Talk to someone 19. Don't lie 20. Don't pretend 21. Trust yourself 22. Cry 23. Accept 24. Don't hurt yourself 25. Don't hurt anyone 26. Keep moving 27. Regret 28. Forget 29. Make peace 30. Make love 31. Banish wars 32. Banish hate 33. Be free 34. Feel free 35. Stand still 36. Don't be scared of death 37. Have faith 38. Admire 39. Stand strong 40. Surrender 41. Dance 42. Smile 43. Laugh 44. Break 45. Touch 46. Have secrets 47. Share secrets 48. Know secrets 49. Relieve 50. Don’t lie to yourself 51. Release 52. Run 53. To me.. visually the meaning is totally different.

In this version it is like a process of freeing yourself from someone? Going on with life..

It makes sense with your first paragraph.. WOW (got your edit)

OK! theres a list.. I LOVE U! hehe

It may be made up but... I'm going to read them now.

8. apparently his use of the numbered list is ironic
It kind of makes sense since there is so much irony in the lyrics;here is a quote from him,on it from a Rolling Stone article:

http://www.rollingstone.com/artists/thefray/articles/story/9550361/the_fray_live_the_high_life
Their friendship has produced an album full of stick-in-your-head hooks, bright guitars and eloquent narratives of personal relationships that together seem custom-made for Top Forty radio or your favorite teenage television drama. The title track addresses Slade's work mentoring a crack-addicted teen, also a musician. "I wrote the song about how there's no formula for bringing somebody out of that," he says. "Life is this organic risk, this give-and-take. You could lose your life -- you never know."

I don't know where that list is from unless it's theirs...I can't find it anywhere else on google, plus the numbers from 86 to 99 are missing, which makes me think that the kid died perhaps (eighty-sixed) and then he had to 'let go', which is 99.

9. You are the best!
I have been wondering that since I saw it. It was all to "ordered" to be totally random.

On that note.. I'll have some wine!

10. I watched the video that you linked, I think it's a fan vid.

If you extend the text up there at the top right where it says (more) there is background on the person that uploaded it.

:hi:

edit: okay, it looks like the band has asked people to make their own videos for the song. Cool. That is one of the most beautiful, heartfelt songs I've heard in a very, very long time. I've loved it from the first time I've heard it. I'm watching this version and I see the numbered list popping up here and there.

12. I just have a thing for that song, lol
I guess because it seems like people aren't writing songs about stuff like that anymore. Or maybe it has always been rare, it's so selfless.
