I'm 46, certainly in perimenopause. For the past 6+ months my periods are as regular as usual but a little lighter and maybe a day less lengthy. This current period is unusually heavy though. I use ultra absorbant tampons and had to change 4 times so far today. I am not crampy at all or anything.

Has this happened to other women in this phase of life? Being erratic?

3. Expect ANYTHING
during this horrible transition period.

Could be lighter, could be like a freaking' hemorrhage - all is normal.

5. LOL tell me about it!
I'm in the midst of a major bipolar disorder. I've lost count of the number of med adjustments we've made in 4 months.

The first major problem was 6 years ago and lasted a year. But I ws quite depressed by Bush's ascension too. This time is bad but not nearly as bad.

18. Is that all? If you didn't puke green and make your head spin
360 degrees, you didn't get all you could out of your menopausal experience.

And yes, it's common for periods, flow, etc to become erratic. However, check with your MD to make sure things aren't going completely haywire.

7. Welcome, my sister
Won't you have some chocolate? :hurries around to set out the chocolate, dusts off a chair, plumps some cushions:.

I'm thinking that chocolate (hell, anything that makes us feel better,) during the menopausal years should be tax deductible.

9. Thanks Julie!
I'm not really craving chocolate right now. I did have 3 pieces of toast with margarine and apricot jam, though. I had to fight very hard not to make it 4. Or 6...

usually the first couple of days. I have to change tampons every couple of hours. The ultra size. And yeah, it feels like the ocean is draining out of me.

16. First clue for you: there is no predictable schedule. It could happen tomorrow.
My mother was perimenopausal at 38. It can happen at 35 or so. There's no fucking warning. One night you'll go to sleep next to Mrs. Matcom and the next morning there will be a tired,short-tempered woman who can't remember who the hell you are or why you're in her bed.

Enjoy.

:hi:

I have two words for the men in this thread: Hormone surge. Without getting the thread locked, there are benefits. Unless it's just my friends, it's interesting to watch a woman in her 40's turn into an eighteen-year-old young man.

I get icy cold flashes where I can't get warm. My skin is cold and I'm shivering while everyone else in the room is sweating.

27. If you're concerned, please consult an OB/GYN.
In my early 30's, I went through a "very heavy" phase, which was horrible. But I just put up with it, and took more tylenol. A few years later, I had a ruptured ovary and ended up in emergency surgery. It turned out that I had endometreosis. Now I'm on estrogen to control the flow, and it's working much, much better for me.

30. Well I'm not in the least bit of pain
And it's lightened up a bit but if it becomes a trend I'll take your advice. I should go to the gynecologist anyway.

Sorry you had so many complicatiuons, though : (

31. Oh the joys of womanhood...
I'm wondering if/when my mother is/will be going through this...

As for me I've got a ways to go, dreading and anticipating it. I'm feeling better today, but Sunday and Monday I was SO fatigued, and have to make sure I changed every couple of hours or so. Didn't get much sleep despite the fatigue. But now I'm through the worst (til next month, sigh...it's going to fall on my b-day, isn't it? FUCK.), and enjoying not being tired/in pain/bitchy...

32. Hell, I'm just starting, and I am extremely irregular.
A month between, 3 months between, 8 months between, 5 months between--it doesn't matter. There is no pattern to it, it just falls the way it does. There are almost no signs of its coming, either, just full-on bleeding from nowhere. I too go through ultra absorbents like mad--every 2 to 3 hours, and one time it was every hour--for the first couple of days. Still go to school and everything. Annoying as all fuck, but what're ya gonna do? It's common to be so effed up when you're beginning and leaving the menstrual years, I guess.
