1. Not at all overlooked in its time
Talk Talk's "Such a Shame"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7ls6yvcfTY

Mark Hollis is the dice man! He takes a chance, fan, on being a hideous troll who would later rip off Damo Suzuki.

68. Right on! "Pelican West" is an absolute jewel of a pop album.
Nick Heyward's solo stuff is also great.

I don't understand why he was never recognized for the pop genius he was.

I love "Pelican West", though.

Did you see Haircut 100 on that show "Reunited" on VH1? It was prett cool.

that I have to turn my belt buckle to the side, but not around the knees, either.

Thanks for your curiosity.

9. The production is a little too much Duran Duran for me
I've been trying to find the version of the song Hollis originally recorded with his nascent punk band. There's nothing seriously wrong with the songwriting, but the New Romantic sound never held many charms for me.

37. I've heard that version, somewhere
a long time ago (late 80s, IIRC). It was pretty rocking.

Talk Talk was seriously overlooked in their day. The 1st album put a lot of people off them, and they were written off as a bad New Romantic/Synth Pop outfit. Their other albums are incredible, each one a step above the last. "Laughing Stock" was amazing.

with a little help from Jane Wiedlin on this one. "Cool Places"

Special effects look cheezy as hell now, but when I was watching this in the 80's (and probably stoned) I thought it was pretty cool.

My favorite radio program, The Bottom Forty, played that song this past Sunday. Greg Glover, the host, said he'd forgotten about it until he saw the video on VH1 Classic. I'd seen that video before and I have it on a mix CD so I was singing along with it. It's apparently about John Lennon.

30. A quick "sweet sixteen"
My concept of "pop" is probably a bit off-center, but here we go:

Firetown, "Carry The Torch"
Translator, "O, Lazarus"
The Three O'Clock, "Spun Gold"
Voice of the Beehive, "I Say Nothing"
Hoodoo Gurus, "Like Wow (Wipeout)"
Steve Wynn, "Caroline" (actually released in '90, but close enough)
Drivin' n Cryin', "Can't Promise You The World"
English Beat, "Save It For Later"
Guadalcanal Diary, "Lonely Street"
Tommy Keene, "Places That Are Gone"
Long Ryders, "Gunslinger Man"
Midnight Oil, "Sometimes"
Syd Straw, "String of Pearls"
Outlets, "Tilted Track"
Psychedelic Furs, "Forever Now"
The Alarm, "Spirit of '76"

Let me add these:
"Bittersweet" Hoodoo Gurus
"Stout and High" The Wagoneers
"Positively Lost Me" Rave Ups
"Find You" Jason and the Scorchers
"Jet Fighter" 3 O'clock
"I Want You Bad" Long Ryders
"Girls" Dwight Twilley
"Baby Ran" 54-40
"Can You Get To That" The Balancing Act
"When the Generals Talk" Midnight Oil
"Ice Queen" The Stranglers

85. Garbage
Guitarist Duke Erikson went on to form Garbage, which, of course, sounds absolutely nothing like Firetown!

For the uninitiated, Firetown was a jangly folk-pop band from Wisconsin that had a couple of albums in the mid Eighties. Very heavy Byrds/Beatles influence.

Because your post contained a couple interesting things that relate to my recent life...

Namely, I just saw the Psych Furs and The Alarm in concert in Detroit. there are about 8 - 10 dates here in the U.S. You might check and see if one's near you...because both the Furs and Alarm were FANTASTIC. "Spirit of '76" was transportive (is that a word?) :-)

But the whole album was excellent.

I actually managed to work some of the lyrics to both songs into a multi-genre research paper that i had to do for my fresham english class in college.

100. Anybody remember The Alarm??
These guys should have been huge, but I think the media either tagged them as U2 clones (which they were not) or focused on their hair (admittedly huge at times) rather than the music.

105. Saw them twice
Opening for Pat Benatar, of all people, at the old Cap Centre outside of Washington in '86, and at the Orpheum in Boston in '88. The Cap Centre show was interesting. You could actually see the crowd get drawn in as the set progressed. By the time they finished up with "Blaze of Glory" and a cover of "Knockin' on Heavens Door", they had most of the 18,000 people in their hands.

Mike Peters is still touring under the Alarm name. I'm going to try to catch the show with the Fixx and Psychedellic Furs in Boston in July.

103. Absolutely my favorite song of the 1980s
"Down the Road Tonight" by Bruce Hornsby with his "Valley Road"
and "Defenders of the Flag" a close second.

I had no idea Alex Chilton was still around then. I only remember
when he was a 16 year old kid with a gravelly voice brought into
a Memphis studio to be a part of the as-yet non-existent "Box Tops"
to sing "The Letter," which went on to be a 60s classic.
